Mexican Spanish to Uzbek: la suya does not establish that the owner is a woman

The feminine ending belongs to the thing possessed

In a Mexican Spanish exchange about luggage, La maleta es suya can identify whose suitcase it is. The Diccionario del español de México explains that suyo agrees in gender and number with the thing possessed. The feminine form suya follows maleta; it does not, by itself, establish that the owner is a woman.

Uzbek has no grammatical gender according to its Universal Dependencies description. A translation should therefore not manufacture a feminine possessive ending to imitate Spanish agreement. At the same time, information explicitly supplied about an owner must remain available: a statement naming a particular woman is more specific than a statement whose only feminine form describes the suitcase.

For an original collection scenario, two travelers place suitcases on the same trolley. One points to the smaller bag and says that it belongs to the other. Selecting an owner from the bag noun’s gender would be unreliable. A name, a direct address or the preceding exchange can identify the intended person; the ending of suya cannot.

A courteous your and a reported their require different reference

The Mexican dictionary records suyo for the person being discussed and also for a person addressed courteously or for people addressed together. Consequently, Es suya can speak directly to the owner or report ownership to somebody else. A translation cannot choose the participant solely by treating every Spanish third-person possessive as an absent third person.

In a hotel lobby, a clerk may ask one guest whether a suitcase is theirs. Later, the same clerk may tell a colleague that the suitcase belongs to that guest. The physical owner has not changed, but the relationship between speaker, listener and owner has. Preserve that difference when translating each message into Uzbek.

If the Spanish input leaves two possible owners, naming the intended person can resolve the ambiguity before translation. This is especially useful when several family members have been mentioned. Adding a name should clarify known information, however, rather than invent a fact about who owns an unattended bag.

Several belongings do not imply several owners

The source contrast between una maleta suya and dos maletas suyas changes the count of suitcases. It need not change the count of owners. Likewise, one jointly owned suitcase and two separately owned suitcases describe different arrangements even though each can be discussed with a Spanish possessive.

Uzbek marks singular and plural in its own nominal and pronominal system. The Universal Dependencies account distinguishes nominal plural suffixes from lexical singular and plural pronouns. This is another reason to check the complete ownership relationship rather than assume a Spanish final s should become plurality on every target reference.

For a final baggage check, keep three facts separate: which objects are being identified, how many objects there are and who owns them. Then determine whether the message addresses that owner or talks about them. An Uzbek translation can preserve all of those facts without reproducing Spanish grammatical gender. A superficially matching possessive is less useful than a message that sends the right suitcase to the right traveler.
