Mexican Spanish to Brazilian Portuguese: exquisite food should not become strange food

A compliment can change direction through a familiar-looking word

Este mole está exquisito praises the dish. Spanish exquisito refers to exceptional quality or taste, as the RAE–ASALE dictionary records. Portuguese esquisito has related historical senses, but its current dictionary entry also includes strange, odd and unpleasant-looking. Copying the familiar-looking adjective into a Brazilian Portuguese food review can therefore make praise sound like concern.

The issue is not that every occurrence of Portuguese esquisito is negative. Priberam records refined and high-quality meanings too, marking them as little used. That qualification matters: a dictionary-listed historical connection does not guarantee that a restaurant customer will understand an ordinary translated compliment in the intended way.

Describe the quality the Mexican speaker actually praises

Compare La salsa está exquisita with La salsa sabe raro. The first expresses enjoyment; the second reports an unusual taste. Rendering both with an adjective likely to suggest strangeness would erase the contrast. Brazilian Portuguese wording should preserve whether the diner is pleased, puzzled or making a complaint.

The Spanish dictionary lists delicioso and sabroso among food-related alternatives to exquisito. Those help identify the intended dimension: taste rather than rarity, an unusual shape or a demanding personality. A translator can select an idiomatic Portuguese compliment that expresses that dimension instead of preserving the visual similarity of the original adjective.

In Tiene un aroma exquisito, the judgement concerns smell. It does not claim that the food has already been tasted. The target should keep the sensory distinction rather than automatically substituting a phrase about flavour. Likewise, una presentación exquisita may praise the arrangement or refinement of a dish without making any statement about its ingredients.

The adjective can describe manners rather than a meal

Un trato exquisito concerns especially considerate or refined treatment. Applying a food-only replacement would be just as misleading as using a strange-sounding adjective for a delicious sauce. The noun being modified, rather than visual similarity alone, establishes which positive quality is relevant: flavour, presentation or interpersonal conduct.

Priberam also gives Portuguese esquisito a sense of being difficult to satisfy, including in relation to food. Consequently, a sentence about a person being esquisito com a comida can suggest pickiness rather than the person possessing exquisite taste. The grammatical relationship and the evaluation both need attention when a source review switches from the meal to the diner.

A Mexican comment such as El postre está exquisito, aunque se ve raro deliberately separates pleasure from unusual appearance. A faithful Brazilian Portuguese rendering should allow both judgements to coexist. Removing the odd appearance would weaken the contrast; changing the praise into strangeness would repeat the same judgement twice. Keeping the positive evaluation distinct from any unusual feature preserves why the writer recommends a dessert that may initially look unfamiliar.
