Spanish to Uzbek: rebuild relative descriptions around the noun and its role

A Spanish relative word carries information beyond linking two phrases

In Spanish, a relative expression both connects a description to its antecedent and performs a function inside that description. The academy illustrates el lugar desde donde escribo: the preposition and relative adverb identify the place from which the writing happens. For Uzbek translation, retaining only the broad idea of a place would lose the source relationship. A destination, a point of departure, and a setting are different readings even when the same noun is involved.

The Spanish relative description normally follows its noun; it does not simply behave like an adjective that can be placed before that noun. This matters because Uzbek commonly builds the corresponding description before the noun. Find the boundaries of the entire Spanish modifying clause before rearranging it. Words belonging to the main event must not accidentally become part of the description. The academy also distinguishes relative clauses with an explicit antecedent from those whose antecedent is implicit, so not every Spanish relative construction supplies a separate noun to translate.

Uzbek participles place the description before its head

Nicholas Kontovas’s Uzbek teaching notes illustrate uyimizga kelgan kishilar for people who came to our house and uyimizga kelayotgan kishilar for people currently coming to it. The difference lies in the participial form before kishilar, not in an equivalent of Spanish que after the noun. The notes describe completed, ongoing, and non-completed actions relative to a reference time, which can belong to a narrative rather than simply being the present moment.

That timing matters when a Spanish passage describes someone who was arriving during an earlier event. Do not convert every Uzbek form containing -gan into an independent past-tense assertion. The same notes show that a short expression such as biz kelgan joy can leave the place’s relationship to coming unresolved without context. A Spanish source explicitly naming where someone came from must therefore retain that departure relationship rather than settling for an ambiguous phrase that could also suggest a destination. The target description may need a more explicit construction.

Keep the whole noun phrase’s case separate from its internal description

The Uzbek Universal Dependencies documentation records nominal case and also case on some non-finite verb forms. It distinguishes participles from finite verbs and verbal nouns, and describes six case values. This gives a useful structural warning for Spanish-to-Uzbek work: the noun phrase’s function in the main sentence must still be expressed after its relative description has been assembled. The role described inside that modifier does not automatically supply the phrase’s external role.

Uzbek also has no grammatical gender in that description. Spanish masculine or feminine agreement on a referring expression should therefore not trigger an invented target gender ending. Preserve a person’s identity when the source makes it relevant, while using Uzbek case and person marking for their actual grammatical functions. A long Spanish identification can require substantial reordering without changing who is described, when the described action occurs, or what that person or place contributes to the main event.
