Mexican Spanish to Querétaro Otomi: mande, questions and meaningful apostrophes

A courteous response can be a request to hear again

Mexican Spanish mande can answer someone calling your name or signal that something was not heard. The Diccionario del español de México identifies both courteous functions. When translating a short exchange into Querétaro Otomi, determine which one is intended. A response acknowledging a call does not necessarily ask a content question, while an unheard sentence may need a request for repetition.

An official INALI writing norm provides the example ¿Te’ä? with the Spanish gloss ¿Mande?. This is useful attested material, but its presence does not establish that one expression covers every Mexican use in every Otomi community. The norm covers a broad grouping across several states. Treat the example as a documented comparison and preserve the actual conversational function in the intended local variety.

The apostrophe can represent a consonant

INALI’s norm explicitly describes the saltillo, written with an apostrophe, as the glottal letter. It gives examples both at the beginning of words and within them. Therefore an apostrophe in an Otomi result should not automatically be removed as an accidental quotation mark or a leftover from Spanish punctuation. Doing so can alter the written representation of a sound.

This matters in the attested question ¿Te’ä? and in to’o, who. A Mexican Spanish reader may recognize the surrounding question marks and assume that the remaining apostrophe is another punctuation choice. The official description assigns it a different job. Copying the question while stripping internal marks can damage the target word even though the sentence still looks neatly punctuated.

Shared question marks do not imply shared grammar

The writing norm prescribes opening and closing question marks and illustrates alternatives with and without ha, such as ¿Ha gi mpefi? and ¿Gi mpefi?, both glossed as asking whether the listener is working. These examples show an actual target question pattern; they do not mean that Spanish questions can be converted by exchanging individual words inside identical punctuation.

For Mexican Spanish input, distinguish asking whether an action is happening from answering someone who spoke. The question-mark convention alone cannot supply the missing speech act. Conversely, recognizing a Spanish-style opening mark in Otomi output is no reason to treat the language as a regional spelling of Spanish. The familiar punctuation surrounds a different grammatical and sound system.

Use the local variety without deleting its written distinctions

INALI’s accompanying description notes substantial internal Otomi variation. The shared writing norm is a resource for representing that diversity, not proof that all community forms are interchangeable. For the Querétaro target, do not silently replace a local expression with one drawn from another region just because both sources label the language Otomi.

The practical sequence for this pair is to identify whether Mexican mande acknowledges or requests repetition, select an expression appropriate to the target variety, and retain the letters and marks required by that expression. This preserves both the courtesy of the exchange and the target’s written form. It avoids turning a small conversational reply into an unsupported command or a visually simplified but different word.
