Spanish to Querétaro Otomi: an acute mark can indicate tone rather than Spanish stress

Canto and cantó demonstrate a Spanish stress contrast

Spanish canto can mean I sing, while cantó means that he or she sang. The written accent helps identify a stressed syllable and distinguishes forms with different grammatical meanings. A reader accustomed to this system may assume that an acute mark in an Otomi output tells them to stress the marked syllable in the same way.

The Secretaría de Educación Pública’s Programa de Lengua Hñöñhö describes a tonal system and a writing convention in which the acute marks high tone and a doubled vowel marks rising tone. Within that convention, the marks describe pitch contrasts rather than simply applying the Spanish rules for stressed syllables. The discussion here follows that programme’s examples, not every Otomi variety or spelling practice.

A familiar-looking accent can separate different grammatical forms

The programme contrasts gá hoki, translated there as lo hiciste, with ga hoki, lo hago. Removing the acute is therefore not a harmless typographical simplification in the illustrated system. It changes a distinction the teaching material associates with different participants and times. The same consonants and vowels do not guarantee the same grammatical message.

The Spanish contrast canto versus cantó offers an analogy for why a small mark can matter, but it does not explain how to pronounce the Otomi contrast. In Spanish the reader locates the stressed syllable. In the Hñöñhö example the reader needs the tonal value represented by the programme’s convention. Applying one language’s pronunciation rule to the other would confuse two different systems.

This matters when a Spanish message reports a completed action by the listener rather than an action by the speaker. A translation must preserve that difference; it cannot treat the two Otomi forms as optional accented and unaccented versions of one expression. The Spanish tense ending and subject interpretation need to be reflected in the target construction as a whole.

Two identical vowels are not automatically an accidental repetition

The programme also distinguishes ngu, glossed como, from nguu, house. In its analysis the doubled vowel represents the rising tone. A Spanish reader may be tempted to delete one vowel as a typing error, but doing so would collapse the very distinction the spelling is intended to show.

Spanish tú and tu provide a second caution from the source language: even a short word can lose a grammatical distinction when its accent is removed. Yet the reason for the Otomi spelling remains its own system, not the Spanish distinction between a pronoun and a possessive. Similar-looking marks do not have to encode identical categories.

For a Spanish-to-Otomi message, retain the target marks and doubled vowels produced by the relevant orthographic convention rather than normalising them according to Spanish expectations. The demonstrated gá/ga and ngu/nguu contrasts concern meaning and grammar, not decoration. They show why evaluating the output requires attention to the target’s tone notation as well as the source’s stress and grammatical forms.
