Mexican Spanish to Malagasy: an institutional we does not automatically include the reader

Identify whose position the message presents

A Mexican Spanish representative can write nosotros while presenting an institution’s position. That wording does not necessarily invite the reader into the opinion or commitment. When translating into Malagasy, identify who the message represents before choosing a first-person plural form: the institution, the writer and colleagues, or a group shared with the recipient.

El Colegio de México’s dictionary records ordinary group reference for nosotros and a courtesy use in place of first-person singular, especially among representatives of an authority or institution. A plural-looking source therefore does not always provide a literal headcount. It also does not independently establish whether the person receiving the message agrees with what follows.

For an original library response, a staff member may write that we have decided to extend opening hours. A reader benefits from the decision without participating in making it. The Malagasy translation should not turn that response into a claim that the reader helped decide, especially if the following sentence asks for the reader’s opinion.

Malagasy distinguishes including and excluding the addressee

The Peace Corps Madagascar introduction lists isika as inclusive we and izahay as exclusive we. The contrast concerns the person addressed. It is not simply an informal and formal pair, nor does an exclusive form automatically imply hostility. A staff group can exclude a visitor from its own administrative action while welcoming that visitor warmly.

The same lesson presents basic sentences with the subject after the predicate or predicate–object sequence. A group reference later in the Malagasy sentence need not be missing or attached to the wrong action just because Spanish places nosotros earlier. Interpret the participant relationship across the complete clause rather than requiring identical word order.

In the library example, distinguish what the staff will prepare from what staff and visitors will do together at an opening event. The intended group can change between those clauses. Choosing one Malagasy form for the entire letter would risk either involving the visitor in internal preparation or excluding them from an activity meant to be shared.

Courtesy does not supply permission to invent a group

If the Spanish writer uses an institutional voice while speaking personally, clarify whether the commitment belongs to the institution or only to that writer. Do not invent a committee meeting, collective vote or approval process to justify the plural. The translation needs the intended scope of the commitment, not an imagined explanation for the writer’s style.

For a follow-up message, a staff member might personally offer to bring a book while confirming that the library will provide the venue. Those promises have different responsible parties. Keeping the distinction clear helps the recipient know whom to contact if the book or room is unavailable, without overstating what the institution has agreed to provide.

When saving the Malagasy response, record who the first-person reference includes and which promise it carries. Review those details when the recipient changes: a message to a colleague and one to a visitor may require different group boundaries. Preserve a shared activity as shared, an institutional decision as institutional and an individual offer as individual, even when Spanish packages them through similar first-person wording.
