Spanish to Malagasy: la ciudad donde enseña does not make the city a teacher
A Spanish relative clause can describe a place rather than an actor
Spanish la ciudad donde enseña Rakoto identifies the city in which Rakoto teaches. The city does not perform the teaching. Spanish donde supplies the location relationship, while Rakoto remains the teacher. Replacing the relative clause with an ordinary subject description could turn the place being identified into the apparent actor.
A Malagasy study by Edward Keenan, Baholisoa Ralalaoherivony and Jeannot Fils Ranaivoson illustrates ny tanàna (izay) ampianaran-dRakoto for the town where Rakoto teaches. The authors explain that the circumstantial voice form is required in this example. Thus a voice difference in the Malagasy verb can preserve a relationship carried by Spanish donde.
A different voice does not necessarily describe a different event
The study also contrasts an ordinary statement that someone lives in a house with a construction placing the house in the relevant grammatical position. In the latter, the house is the location lived in, not a resident. This is a useful warning for Spanish readers accustomed to identifying the person doing an action through an ordinary subject–verb relationship.
Compare Spanish la profesora que enseña allí with la ciudad donde enseña la profesora. The first identifies a person through her teaching; the second identifies a place through that same activity. Substituting que for donde without rebuilding the relationship would not preserve the second description. The Malagasy translation likewise needs the construction appropriate to the participant being identified.
An education directory could contain both descriptions on the same page. A teacher profile asks which person works there, while a location heading asks which city hosts the teaching. Neither description implies that the city employs itself or that the teacher is being taught. Those mistaken interpretations can arise if a target voice label is treated as a simple substitute for Spanish active or passive.
Spanish prepositions can disappear without losing their relationship
Spanish la casa en la que vive and la casa donde vive both identify a dwelling through residence. The visible en in the first wording is not a separate item that every Malagasy version must retain in the same position. The target may express the relationship through its voice morphology and the surrounding noun construction.
Conversely, the absence of a separate word corresponding to donde does not mean that any verb form is acceptable. If a housing description accidentally identifies the resident rather than the dwelling, it can point to the wrong entry in a listing. The Spanish head noun and the role it plays inside the relative clause jointly determine what must remain identifiable.
The town example is therefore useful beyond a vocabulary translation of ciudad. It demonstrates a structural requirement of a particular Malagasy construction. Keep track of whether the Spanish description selects a teacher, a teaching location, a resident, or a dwelling. A faithful Malagasy sentence may change the verb’s voice while preserving exactly the same actor, activity, and place.
