Mexican Spanish to Hindi: interpret caer bien before translating the experience

Caer bien can express sympathy or a beneficial effect

The Diccionario del español de México distinguishes caerle bien or mal of something, meaning that it has a good or bad effect, from the corresponding expression about someone producing sympathy or dislike. Los mariscos le caen mal concerns the effect of seafood; it does not necessarily report a dislike of its taste. A Hindi translation that turns every occurrence into a preference statement can therefore change the reason being given.

The dictionary also gives Los niños siempre le han caído bien for personal sympathy. In that context, the children are not physically falling and no food reaction is involved. Identify the participant who has the experience and the person or thing producing it before choosing the Hindi predicate. A Mexican Spanish message about getting along with someone must remain different from a message about how a meal affects the speaker, even though the source uses the same verb and evaluative adverb.

Hindi liking constructions mark the experiencer with को

The Hindi-Urdu open textbook describes dative experiencer constructions and illustrates liking with अच्छा लगना and पसंद होना. Its example उसको आम सबसे ज़्यादा पसंद है concerns a person’s preference for mangoes. The experiencer is expressed through a dative form, while the thing liked has a separate grammatical role. This is a useful pattern for interpreting preference in Hindi, but it is not an automatic translation of every Mexican Spanish caer expression.

The textbook also explains that agreement in these constructions does not follow the experiencer as though that person were an ordinary unmarked subject. The unmarked nominal associated with the experience can control the verb instead. Thus, changing a Spanish me to le because a different person has the same preference does not necessarily require the Hindi predicate to change in the corresponding way. Preserve whose experience is described, while letting the selected Hindi construction determine its agreement. A Spanish indirect-object pronoun and a Hindi dative form help identify a role; they do not supply a complete sentence pattern by themselves.

The same Hindi verb participates in different constructions

The Central Hindi Directorate’s certificate-course lesson distinguishes adjective-plus-लगना expressions of feeling from an inflected infinitive followed by लगना, which indicates beginning an action. It gives उसको हिंदी भाषा अच्छी लगती है for liking Hindi. Here अच्छी and लगती belong to a description involving the feminine language noun; the sentence does not say that the person began speaking Hindi.

This distinction matters when a Mexican Spanish account combines an initial impression with a later change in behavior. A line saying that a new colleague seems likable and a line saying that someone started talking to that colleague describe different developments. Do not derive a Hindi inceptive construction merely from an abstract idea of “coming to” feel something. Likewise, an adjective-based impression must not replace an explicitly stated beginning of an action. Interpret the Mexican idiom first, then select the Hindi experience or event construction that preserves the actual claim without adding physical falling, an unsupported preference, or an unmentioned change of activity.
