Lower Sorbian to Afrikaans: a detached description still belongs to its noun

Recover the phrase before rebuilding its order

Pankau’s study of colloquial Lower Sorbian documents descriptions whose parts occur apart from one another. A degree expression can be separated from its adjective, and certain noun modifiers can be separated from the noun. These are constructional patterns in the researched colloquial variety, not a license to scatter every modifier freely in every written standard.

The study illustrates a clause meaning that the war was so horrible, with material corresponding to so occurring away from horrible. For an Afrikaans translation, identify the complete degree description before deciding where its words belong. An intervening noun or auxiliary does not necessarily become the thing modified by the degree expression.

This matters in an original Lower Sorbian account contrasting a mildly difficult period with an extremely difficult one. If the intensifying element is attached to a different Afrikaans predicate, the target can retain difficult while changing the point of the contrast. Reconstruct the source modifier relationship instead of interpreting adjacent words as a complete phrase by default.

Describing an item differs from making a new assertion

Pankau also discusses a marked arrangement meaning that someone has a beautiful house, with the descriptive word separated from house. Its marked status is important: the paper does not present every such order as equally neutral. The description still belongs to the house; it is not automatically a separate assertion about the owner.

The Afrikaans teaching grammar distinguishes attributive adjectives directly before nouns from predicative use. It discusses an attributive e-form as a separate issue from ordinary degree forms. A source adjective’s distance from its noun therefore cannot by itself determine that the Afrikaans translation needs a predicative construction.

For an original Lower Sorbian description of somebody’s attractive house, decide whether the main assertion concerns possession or beauty. An Afrikaans sentence asserting possession of a beautiful house and one separately asserting that the house is beautiful can overlap in information, but they organize the claim differently. Retain that distinction when the source has displaced descriptive material.

Inflection is not a substitute for identifying attachment

The Afrikaans grammar illustrates wilde, wilder and wildste when distinguishing attributive inflection from comparative and superlative formation. These forms do not all express the same kind of grammatical change. A source modifier’s emphatic placement cannot simply be reproduced by choosing a stronger target degree.

An original Lower Sorbian sentence that foregrounds a beautiful object does not necessarily call it more beautiful than another object. If the target adds comparative meaning merely to express emphasis, it introduces a comparison absent from the source. Preserve the property and its degree independently from the information highlighted by its placement.

For this pair, reconstruct the source phrase first: which noun receives the description, which adjective receives the degree modifier, and whether any comparison is actually asserted. Then use an Afrikaans noun phrase or predicate appropriate to that relation. The target need not copy the colloquial Lower Sorbian separation to preserve its meaning, and a familiar adjective ending cannot establish the correct attachment on its own.
