Lower Sorbian to Spanish: preserving two participants and interpreting fixed expressions

A dual form can carry information that Spanish plural leaves open

The Sorbian Institute’s Lower Sorbian documentation describes an actively used dual, alongside the language’s inherited inflectional system. A source referring to two participants can therefore encode their number grammatically. Spanish nosotros or ellos alone does not express that the group contains exactly two people. In a translation of a joint arrangement, a plain plural may preserve the participants’ roles while making the size of the group less explicit.

The Spanish academies define ambos and ambas as both, referring to two people or things. These words can help make the source pair explicit where that information matters, but they are not a separate dual verb paradigm. The academies also distinguish ambos from sendos, which distributes one item to each participant. A Lower Sorbian dual does not by itself justify replacing both with one each. Decide whether the source asserts a pair, a shared action, or a distribution before interpreting the Spanish wording.

An absent Spanish subject pronoun need not mean an absent participant

A Lower Sorbian source can identify person and number through inflection; its dual creates a particularly precise number distinction. Spanish likewise permits an unexpressed subject, but its pronoun system packages the distinctions differently. The academies explain that subject-pronoun omission is not arbitrary: an explicit pronoun may express contrast or resolve an ambiguity. Counting pronouns across the two sentences is therefore a poor way to decide whether the translator has retained everybody.

For a source contrasting one person with another, verify that the Spanish sentence still communicates that contrast rather than automatically deleting every optional pronoun. For a source describing two people together, verify the pair separately from the question of whether a pronoun appears. Usted adds another interpretation issue: it addresses the listener but takes third-person grammatical agreement. That agreement cannot by itself establish that the translation has switched to talking about an absent person. Read the target person and number choices in their actual address context.

The source’s everyday expressions may not describe literal objects

The Sorbian Institute’s own phrase collection introduces ze słyńcom as an expression for very early in the morning. It also presents nocny wron with the meaning night owl. These are useful reminders that a Lower Sorbian message about somebody’s schedule may use imagery rather than a plain clock-time description. A Spanish translation must preserve whether the person rises early or stays active late; reproducing an isolated noun does not establish that meaning.

This concern is distinct from the Institute’s documented German borrowings in Lower Sorbian. A recognizable German-looking root may be an adapted word with Lower Sorbian endings, whereas an expression composed of familiar source words may have a conventional figurative meaning. Neither surface familiarity nor unfamiliarity reliably identifies the translation problem. For a description of working habits, identify the complete expression first, then judge whether the Spanish describes the same habit, rather than treating the phrase as a list of unrelated objects.
