Spanish to Afrikaans: keep the adjective attached to the right description

A Spanish ending can show which nouns share a property

Spanish adjective agreement can reveal the scope of a description. The RAE contrasts a phrase with traje y mantilla blancos, where the white description covers both garments, against traje y mantilla blanca, where it describes only the nearer feminine noun. When translating into Afrikaans, interpret that relationship before removing the source gender and number endings. Otherwise a property can accidentally spread to an item the Spanish sentence did not describe.

Afrikaans does not reproduce Spanish agreement through matching masculine and feminine adjective forms. Taalportaal explains that a predicative adjective is uninflected. In a coordinated description, the target may therefore need its wording and phrase structure to keep the source scope clear rather than relying on the same visible adjective endings.

Describing a noun and asserting a property are different constructions

Taalportaal contrasts die vinnige motor, the fast car, with Die motor is vinnig, asserting that the car is fast. The adjective’s form changes with the construction. That distinction is different from Spanish gender and number agreement: the Afrikaans attributive ending should not be read as a feminine marker or as evidence for several cars.

A Spanish phrase identifying a fast car may occur inside a longer instruction about which vehicle to choose. Turning it into a separate statement that a car is fast can weaken its identifying role. Conversely, a Spanish sentence asserting speed should not become an isolated label with no predicate. The adjective’s position and its connection to the noun determine what the message does.

Word order is not a safe substitution rule

Spanish frequently places descriptive adjectives after their nouns, while the Afrikaans attributive example puts the adjective before the noun. Rebuilding the phrase is therefore necessary even when the property itself has a straightforward equivalent. Keep the noun and its modifier together as a unit rather than exchanging words in their original order.

This becomes especially important with a list containing several items. A Spanish final adjective can modify a coordinated group or only a nearby noun, depending on its agreement and the wider structure. Simply moving it before the first Afrikaans noun can change that reach. Resolve the Spanish scope first, then express the same grouping in the target.

Not every Afrikaans adjective permits the same alternation

Taalportaal notes lexical restrictions on attributive and predicative uses. Its discussion of kwaad and kwaai shows that closely related-looking forms can differ in use and meaning. A translator should therefore avoid assuming that every Spanish adjective can be moved between target positions by adding or removing one ending. The selected target adjective must fit the construction and intended property.

For Spanish-to-Afrikaans descriptions, three distinctions deserve separate attention: what property is stated, which noun or nouns it applies to and whether it identifies something within a phrase or functions as the sentence’s predicate. Spanish agreement offers evidence for those decisions; Afrikaans expresses the result through its own adjective forms and syntax. Losing a source gender ending can be normal, but losing the boundary of the description changes the content.
