Reading Hindi meaning before writing the English sentence
Work out who did what before rearranging the sentence
A Hindi sentence can put the main verb near the end and mark relationships with small words after nouns. English normally needs a more explicit subject–verb–object arrangement. Find the action and its participants first; then write an English sentence around them. Do not assume the first noun is always the person performing the action, especially in sentences containing ने, को, or a passive construction.
For example, मुझे भूख लगी है is naturally “I am hungry.” A word-by-word version describing hunger as something that has “attached” to the speaker sounds strange in ordinary English. Here मुझे identifies the person experiencing the state. Similar-looking constructions need to be understood as whole expressions rather than translated by assigning every Hindi word a separate English slot.
Resolve time words instead of guessing
कल can refer to yesterday or tomorrow. The rest of the sentence usually provides the direction in time: मैं कल आया था refers to a male speaker who came yesterday, while मैं कल आऊँगा means that a male speaker will come tomorrow. A translation of the isolated word cannot reliably settle which day is intended.
In a scheduling message, a missing verb or a fragment such as “कल 5 बजे” deserves special attention. Before sending an English appointment time, establish the date from the conversation, not just the dictionary. If the message may be read later, writing the actual date can preserve the intended appointment more clearly than either “yesterday” or “tomorrow.” Do not silently invent a date that the source does not establish.
Preserve respect without inventing titles
Hindi आप and तुम both commonly become English “you.” That loss of a grammatical distinction does not require adding “sir,” “madam,” or a family title to every sentence. Respect can be carried through a courteous request, an appropriate greeting, and the overall style. Conversely, a blunt English imperative may erase the courtesy of a Hindi request even when its basic meaning is correct.
Kinship words may identify a precise family relationship or act as a familiar form of address. Translate their function in the specific exchange. If an older stranger is being addressed warmly, an English reader may misunderstand a literal family label as proof of a biological relationship. When an actual family connection matters, preserve the relationship rather than reducing everyone to a vague “relative.”
Do not turn every Hindi ending into an English pronoun
वह can become “he,” “she,” or “that,” depending on what it refers to. Agreement and earlier sentences may help identify the referent, but a noun’s grammatical gender is not sufficient evidence that an object is a person. Where the source genuinely leaves identity uncertain, repeating a known name or using an appropriate neutral construction is better than guessing.
Check the finished English for complete clauses, articles, and natural verb forms. Hindi can express a perfectly clear message through patterns that English does not copy directly. The goal is to retain the original information and attitude while giving an English reader a sentence they can understand without reconstructing Hindi grammar.

Hindi uses Devanagari and distinguishes several levels of polite address. Check आप versus तुम for your audience and verify grammatical gender when context is limited.
English words such as “bank” and “right” have several meanings. Add a full sentence to help resolve them. English “you” does not distinguish formal address or singular from plural; specify the audience when reviewing the result.
