Punjabi to English: interpret endings before simplifying them
Confirm that the source is the Punjabi you can read here
The Punjabi option on this page uses Gurmukhi. It is not a label for every possible Punjabi script. If the original is in Shahmukhi, confirm that the input is being handled through a suitable supported route rather than assuming the same written characters are expected. The spoken language and the writing system are related but separate choices.
Gurmukhi consonant letters combine with vowel signs, and some signs appear around their consonant rather than in an English-looking sequence. A copied word can therefore look unfamiliar without being incorrectly encoded. Preserve the source spelling while examining the meaning. Deleting a small mark to make the line look tidier can change the word you are trying to translate.
Grammatical gender does not make an object a person
ਘਰ means “house” and is grammatically masculine; ਕੁਰਸੀ means “chair” and is feminine. English normally refers to either object as “it.” Do not carry Punjabi noun gender into English “he” or “she” unless the source is genuinely talking about a person or using deliberate personification.
The surrounding verb and adjective may contain agreement information, but interpret what they agree with before drawing conclusions. A form describing a feminine object does not establish that the owner or speaker is female. This is especially useful when translating a short description where the person and their possession appear close together.
A changed ending can mean more than plural
ਮੁੰਡਾ is “boy”; ਮੁੰਡੇ can represent “boys” in a direct plural construction, but the same visible ending can also occur because of grammatical case. Read the following words before deciding whether English requires one boy or several. A numeral, a postposition, and the wider sentence can resolve what the isolated form leaves uncertain.
Similarly, a statement such as ਮੈਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ is naturally “I go,” with a masculine speaker form in Punjabi. English does not need an added phrase announcing the speaker’s gender. Retain information that affects the message, but avoid expanding every agreement ending into a separate description. The natural English sentence can be shorter while preserving the actual assertion.
Rebuild the message around the action
Punjabi commonly places its main verb later than English does. Identify the action and its participants, then arrange an English clause rather than preserving source order. A short Punjabi expression can need an explicit English subject or article. Supplying those grammatical words should clarify the intended meaning without adding new facts.
For personal and family messages, distinguish an actual relationship from a familiar form of address. An English reader may interpret a literal family label as proof that two people are related. Where the relationship matters, preserve its specificity; where the word is functioning socially, choose an English formulation that fits that use. Finish by checking names, amounts, and reference strings against the original so an otherwise fluent translation still identifies the correct person or transaction.
