Bengali to English: show the subject without losing the tone
Start with the verb ending, not the first dictionary entry
Bengali can encode the subject’s person in a conjugated verb. A short message may therefore be complete even when it lacks a separate written pronoun. English often needs that pronoun restored. Establish who is acting before deciding whether the sentence is a report, request, or instruction; the first visible noun need not answer that question on its own.
আমি বই পড়ি can naturally become “I read books.” The verb follows the object in Bengali, but English normally places “read” before “books.” Reordering is part of producing an ordinary English sentence. It should not change who is reading or turn a general statement about reading into a claim about one specific book.
Translate respect through the whole English message
আপনি কেমন আছেন? is a respectful “How are you?” English does not have a separate respectful pronoun that must replace আপনি. Courtesy can remain in the greeting, request, and overall style. Automatically adding “sir” or “madam” may introduce an identity or degree of formality that the original did not specify.
Familiar address does not always call for English slang either. A sentence between friends can be straightforward and warm without exaggerated informal spelling. Determine what the Bengali tone does in the relationship, then find an English voice that performs that function. Translating every grammatical distinction through an extra title can make a simple exchange sound strained.
Avoid guessing gender from a Bengali pronoun
সে can refer to “he” or “she.” Unlike English, Bengali personal pronouns do not divide third-person human reference into those two grammatical categories. Look back to a named person or established description before selecting an English gendered pronoun. Where the source remains genuinely ambiguous, a suitable neutral construction can preserve that uncertainty.
This matters particularly in short introductions, forwarded messages, and reports about several people. A smooth English sentence can still be wrong if it attaches an action to the wrong person. Repeating a known name is often clearer than letting successive “he” or “she” references obscure who is meant. Do not infer gender simply from a person’s occupation.
Script recognition and meaning are separate checks
Bengali vowel signs and conjunct letters can look unfamiliar when copied into a different font. Do not treat an unfamiliar joined shape as evidence that the source word is corrupt. When an isolated word is uncertain, consult a Bengali dictionary using the complete spelling instead of splitting a joined consonant sequence into guessed English sounds.
For example, বই means “book,” but a whole message still determines whether English needs “a book,” “the book,” or “books.” Supply an English article according to the intended reference, not a mechanical rule for every occurrence of the noun. Finally, check names, amounts, and identifiers separately from the prose. A readable English translation is useful only if it still points to the same person, payment, or booking.
