Filipino to Welsh: translating the question before choosing the reply
What exactly is being confirmed?
Filipino ba can ask whether a whole statement holds, but its position can also draw attention to the particular element being questioned. NIU contrasts an ordinary question about Tess going to Cebu tomorrow with a version beginning Bukas ba. In the latter, the date is specifically at issue. A Welsh translation should preserve whether the writer is checking the trip itself or checking that it happens tomorrow.
This is especially relevant in scheduling messages. An answer confirming that a journey is planned does not necessarily confirm the proposed day. If the source question emphasizes tomorrow, the Welsh exchange needs to keep the time contrast available to the recipient. Moving the date into an unremarkable part of the sentence can make a confirmation look broader or narrower than the original.
The NIU lesson also notes exceptions to its usual ba-position pattern involving ka and other enclitic particles. Therefore, the word immediately before ba is not an infallible guide to the intended focus of every sentence. The grammatical construction and the contrast in the conversation still matter. The lesson concerns Tagalog-based Filipino; its positional explanation should not be generalized to every language spoken in the Philippines.
A Welsh answer can identify the speaker without repeating a pronoun
The official South Wales foundation guide pairs Wnei di helpu? with Gwnaf: a question about whether the addressee will help receives a first-person commitment from that person. In a translated Filipino conversation, the reply’s person must follow the person now speaking. Copying the person form from the question would turn the answer into a statement about somebody else.
The guide gives different short-answer sets for conditional and future constructions, and do/naddo for its concise-past questions. This means an isolated affirmative reply has no single automatic Welsh equivalent across all these constructions. To translate a brief response, recover the question’s verb and construction before selecting the answer. A reply confirming a past event is different from one committing to help later.
Who is included when the answer says we?
Filipino tayo includes the listener, while kami excludes them. A reply made on behalf of a group may therefore give more information about participation than a general first-person plural label suggests. When an individual responds for colleagues, the addressee is not automatically one of those colleagues. When the source invites the listener into a joint activity, excluding them would change the proposal.
This membership distinction interacts with Welsh’s person-sensitive answers. The source may ask what a speaker-and-listener group should do, or it may ask whether a separate team can do something. Before choosing a Welsh group reply, identify who posed the question, who answers it and whether the original pronoun includes the current listener. That is how a short translated answer can preserve both grammatical person and the actual participants, instead of sounding correct while promising action by the wrong people.
