Welsh to Filipino: an ang-marked participant need not be the actor

Start with the event roles expressed in Welsh

Welsh Universal Dependencies documents subjects and objects of verbnouns as well as agents introduced through gan in passive constructions. A noun phrase’s role therefore depends on the complete Welsh construction, rather than merely its proximity to bod or a verbnoun.

The University of Hawaiʻi Filipino grammar describes focus as verbal marking associated with the role of the subject, using its own pedagogical terminology. That role can be actor, object, beneficiary, location, instrument, or cause. A Welsh-to-Filipino translation must recover who acts, what is affected, and who benefits before interpreting the target verb and participant markers. The target subject is not automatically the person carrying out the action.

A request can foreground the thing being handled

The Hawaiʻi course illustrates Pukpukin mo ang pako, hammer the nail, with the nail as its object-focus subject. The person performing the action is represented separately. The example demonstrates why ang before an expression does not by itself mean that expression performs the action.

For an original Welsh workshop instruction, a worker can be asked to handle a particular component. A Filipino rendering that foregrounds the component still needs the worker as actor; it does not turn the component into someone issuing or carrying out the instruction. Conversely, translating every Welsh active request through an actor-focus pattern is not a rule established merely by the source being active. The target verbal construction and its participants must express the same practical instruction.

The beneficiary is neither the purchased object nor the purchaser

The course separately illustrates Ibili mo ang Nanay ng sapatos, buy shoes for Mother. Its analysis identifies the mother as the beneficiary-subject, distinct from the actor and the shoes.

A Welsh message can likewise ask someone to buy an item for another person. If the source uses an ordinary active construction, a beneficiary-focused Filipino sentence does not necessarily change the underlying event to an action performed by that beneficiary. Read all the target roles. Turning the beneficiary into the object being bought would radically change the request, while turning that person into the purchaser would transfer responsibility for it. The source’s for-relationship must survive whichever target focus construction is selected.

Welsh passive wording does not select every target affix

The official Welsh Foundation guide teaches a cael passive construction using a corresponding pronoun and a mutated verbnoun. Filipino focus, as the Hawaiʻi resource explains, spans more roles than an English-style active-versus-passive division.

An original Welsh account may present a repaired item as the subject while naming the person responsible elsewhere. That supplies event-role information, but it does not establish a universal substitution from cael to one Filipino suffix. The target must also select the lexical verb and construction appropriate to the action. Equally, an instrumental or beneficiary focus should not be called an error merely because the Welsh did not use a passive. Distinguish the source’s presentation from its event roles, then confirm that the Filipino verb and marked participants preserve who acted, what was affected, and any beneficiary or instrument explicitly supplied.
