Czech to Telugu: a first-person ending inside a report need not mean the current narrator

Read the report as two connected viewpoints

A Czech report can distinguish the person now telling a story from the person whose words or thoughts it contains. Telugu can mark that distinction in ways that look surprising if every first-person verb ending is read as a reference to the current narrator. An embedded report has its own perspective to consider.

Troy Messick’s study documents Telugu examples in which a non-first-person pronoun controls first-person agreement under speech or attitude verbs. His opening example reports that Raju said he ran: the embedded pronoun is tanu, while the embedded verb carries -nu, analysed as first-person singular agreement. The apparent mismatch does not turn the runner into the person currently reporting Raju’s statement.

This is a specialised construction, not a general instruction to combine arbitrary pronouns and endings. Messick grounds the analysis mainly in consultations with a speaker from Telangana and additional speaker judgments. Treat the described pattern as evidence about that usage, rather than a replacement for every Telugu agreement rule.

The Czech source may leave a reference genuinely unresolved

CzechEncy’s account of reproduced speech distinguishes the original speaker from the reporting speaker. It also discusses cases in which a third-person subject inside an indirect report can refer either to the speaker just named or to another person established earlier in the conversation. Context can therefore be essential before translation begins.

Suppose a Czech running-club message reports that a coach said he ran. Depending on the surrounding conversation, he may identify the coach or another runner. Do not use a guessed Telugu agreement form to settle what the Czech writer left unclear. First establish whose run the source actually reports.

The issue becomes more important when a second report is nested inside the first. A club member can recount what the coach said about another runner’s claim. These are three potentially different people. A first-person-looking form in the target should be interpreted within its construction and perspective, rather than assigned automatically to the club member sending the latest message.

Keep identity separate from the form used to express it

For a practical review, label the person reporting now, the person whose statement is reported and the person said to have run. These labels can coincide, but they should not be merged before reading the source. When the Czech text establishes that the coach reported his own run, preserve that identity through the target report.

When the source instead says that the coach reported somebody else’s run, the target must preserve the difference. The existence of a perspective-sensitive Telugu pattern does not licence switching between those readings. Likewise, an apparently familiar pronoun does not guarantee the intended person has been retained.

Check the reported claim independently of whether it is true. A sentence saying that a coach claimed to have run does not necessarily assert that the run occurred. The translation needs to preserve both who made the claim and what the claim was. That keeps an update about somebody’s words from becoming a new factual assertion by the current narrator.
