Czech to French: participle agreement may follow the object rather than the speaker

The same-looking gender ending may follow a different participant

Czech past-tense participles can show the subject’s gender, but French compound-tense agreement does not always follow that same participant. A feminine source participle should not be converted into a feminine French participle without identifying the target construction and its agreement controller.

The CzechEncy agreement article contrasts first-person statements attributed to Petr and Eva, including jsem zmokl and jsem zmokla. The changed ending concerns the speaker. The first-person auxiliary remains compatible with either speaker, so the source gives gender information through another part of the verb phrase.

The Académie française discusses Madame, je vous ai comprise. Here the feminine agreement follows the preceding direct-object pronoun vous referring to Madame, rather than the person saying je. A feminine French participle can therefore describe an object-related agreement even when Czech source morphology has drawn attention to the actor.

Identify the direct object before deciding whether an agreement was lost

The Académie’s explanation specifically concerns a participle constructed with avoir and a direct object placed before it. The position and function of that object matter. A French ending cannot be judged solely by whether the source speaker is a man or woman.

This is useful in a Czech message where one person says they understood another person. The identity of the writer and the identity of the person understood are different facts. A target agreement correction based on the writer’s gender could attach the ending to the wrong participant.

The Czech source can express these roles through person, case and context, while the French sentence may express them through pronouns and their position. Preserve the two identities first. Only then determine whether the French participle is controlled by a preceding direct object, a subject in another construction, or no agreeing element in the relevant pattern.

Polite vous can still require singular descriptive agreement

Rosen’s account of Czech vykání describes plural finite grammar for one courteous addressee, with singular participles and adjectives where appropriate. French also distinguishes the grammar of polite address from the actual number of people addressed. The OQLF guidance states that adjectives and participles associated with a singular polite vous remain singular.

This resemblance helps interpret a Czech formal message, but it does not make every word order or auxiliary construction identical. In the Académie’s Madame example, singular feminine agreement is additionally tied to the direct-object function and its position before the participle. Courtesy, number and syntactic role contribute separate information.

For Czech to French, trace each agreement ending to the person or object it belongs to. One source clause can contain a female writer addressing a male recipient, or the reverse. The target must preserve who speaks, who is addressed and who is affected by the action; simply reproducing the source’s most visible feminine or plural ending cannot reliably preserve all three relationships.
