Basque to Telugu: quantities, containers and words that look plural

A shopping quantity is not just a noun ending

A Basque shopping list can distinguish a substance, an amount of that substance and a number of separate packages. Telugu needs to preserve that distinction even when the translated noun has a different grammatical number. A word that looks plural does not necessarily instruct the recipient to buy several units. Equally, a Basque phrase without a plural article can still contain an exact number.

Laka contrasts hiru txori with hiru txoriak: three birds versus the three birds. The numeral already supplies the quantity in the first phrase. Its lack of a definite plural ending does not turn three into one. When a Basque list specifies three containers, carry that count into Telugu rather than treating only a visible Basque plural determiner as evidence for plurality.

Milk illustrates why grammatical number can mislead

Vemuri lists Telugu pA-lu, milk, among nouns treated as plural despite their mass meaning. The spelling and transcription belong to his teaching material; the final sounds should not be interpreted as an instruction to count distinct milks. A Basque request for milk can therefore have a Telugu equivalent with plural grammatical behaviour without acquiring the meaning of several cartons.

The same chapter contrasts this with ordinary count nouns whose plurals are formed using lu and its sound-conditioned variants. It gives sI-sA and sI-sA-lu for bottle and bottles. Thus a container can be counted independently of the substance inside it. In a delivery message, a quantity attached to bottles concerns packaging; it is not automatically a measure of litres or a number of milk varieties.

Identify what the number actually measures

Goenaga distinguishes Basque count nouns from mass nouns and explains measure phrases made from a numeral and a unit. His example hamar kilo xaboi specifies ten kilograms of soap. The count belongs to kilograms, while soap identifies the measured material. A Telugu rendering should retain that relationship rather than silently substitute ten bars, ten packets or ten unspecified soap products.

The distinction also permits different readings of apparently countable substances. Goenaga notes that a mass noun may be interpreted through kinds or servings: counting oils can mean counting types, while counting wines can refer to servings. Consequently, a numeral beside a substance is a reason to inspect the source meaning. It does not establish one universal packaging unit that the translator may freely insert.

Keep amount, definiteness and item identity separate

Basque can attach a definite determiner to material nouns as well as ordinary count nouns. Laka illustrates a definite-marked corn noun in a sentence about planting corn. Such marking does not require the Telugu version to introduce one physically separate corn item. The source noun phrase and the activity together establish the reading.

For a Basque order going into Telugu, distinguish an exact item count from an amount and from an already identified supply. Three bottles, a measured weight of soap and milk for the household describe different purchasing tasks. The translation succeeds when the recipient can recover the intended quantity and item, even where the two languages distribute that information across different words and grammatical forms.
