Basque to Spanish: another three may increase the order, while the other three identify a known group

Count the items and identify the group

A Basque request involving beste and a number can ask for an additional quantity or refer to a particular remaining group. In Spanish, preserving only the numeral is not enough. A recipient may need to order three more items or simply retrieve three items already set aside, and those actions have different consequences for stock and payment.

Laka’s grammar directly contrasts beste hiru, another three, with beste hiruak, the other three. The determiner changes how the group is identified. The examples are especially useful because the noun can be absent: a short answer can retain an important reference distinction even when the objects are understood from the conversation.

The RAE–ASALE entry for otro recognises different or additional reference, and its usage guidance permits combinations with numerals such as otros tres and with the definite article. It rejects combining otro directly with the indefinite article un in the standard construction. Do not add an indefinite article simply because an English explanation uses another.

A replacement is not always an extra purchase

Imagine a Basque organiser preparing badge holders for an event. Three holders are already on the desk, three others have been packed in a labelled box, and the organiser might need three additional holders from the supplier. This is an original stock scenario. The numeral three is correct in every case, but the intended group differs.

A request concerning the known boxed group should preserve its identifying details. Turning it into an additional order could increase the purchase unnecessarily. Conversely, if the source requests three more holders, translating it as the known remaining group could leave the event short when those boxed holders have already been allocated.

Different can also concern replacement rather than addition. If the organiser rejects three damaged holders and requests other ones instead, preserve any stated replacement arrangement. The word other alone does not establish whether the supplier should add units to the total or exchange them. The preceding rejection and the actual order details settle that question.

Short replies still need their original reference

Laka’s examples with an omitted noun show why a brief message should remain linked to the question it answers. Another three might answer how many more are needed, while the other three might answer which holders to bring. Reusing the short translation in a different exchange can change its practical interpretation even though its wording remains grammatical.

In Spanish, keep the relevant noun or identifying phrase when the message will be read independently. This is an editing choice for clarity, not permission to invent a box number or item type. If the source does not establish what the three refers to, clarify the real arrangement before converting the reply into a standalone instruction.

Before sending the badge order, check quantity, group identity and whether the transaction adds, retrieves or replaces stock. Then compare the Spanish message with those facts. Preserving the Basque determiner distinction and the intended use of otro helps prevent a small reference change from becoming an incorrect order or a duplicated purchase.
