Basque to Tamil: keeping the standard and scope of a comparison

Two houses, not two interchangeable endings

A Basque property comparison can carry its ranking inside the adjective. Tamil needs a different construction rather than a Tamil equivalent of each Basque suffix. Before translating a housing description, distinguish a house that is large, one that is larger than another house, and the largest house within a specified area. These claims give a reader different information; an impressive description is not automatically a comparison.

Goenaga illustrates the Basque pattern with gure etxea baino garestiagoa: more expensive than our house. The phrase before baino supplies the standard; the adjective ending supplies the greater degree. Keeping the house mentioned first as the subject would reverse this relationship. This matters especially when someone pastes an isolated comparison from a listing and its subject has to be recovered from the preceding sentence.

A spoken Tamil construction makes the relationship explicit

Schiffman gives anda viitte vida inda viidu perusaa irukku for this house being bigger than that house. In this spoken Tamil example, the standard comes first, marked accusative and followed by vida; the house being evaluated comes afterwards. Read the construction as a relationship between two houses, not as a series of replacement words for Basque baino and -ago.

His grammar describes Standard Spoken Tamil. Its romanized examples are useful for understanding the arrangement, but they are not a prescription to write every Tamil property advertisement in conversational spelling. A literary or formal written translation needs its own appropriate forms. The source sentence does not specify the intended Tamil register merely because Basque happens to express the comparison compactly.

The largest needs a field of competitors

The same grammar illustrates a superlative with idu madurey-le-yee periya viidu: the biggest house in Madurai. Here the location and emphatic marking establish the comparison domain. For this particular construction, that domain cannot simply disappear. If a Basque message says the largest without restating the group, identify whether it means the largest available property, the largest on this street, or the largest in the city before choosing the Tamil phrasing.

Basque also distinguishes comparative -ago from superlative -en. Goenaga explains that better paid can compare a proposed job with the current job, whereas best paid selects from the offered jobs. Applied to Tamil, this is a reason to preserve the comparison set rather than making every favourable comparison a claim of being best. A salary improvement and a highest salary are different promises.

Rebuild the description around its noun

Laka shows ordinary Basque descriptive adjectives following the noun, with determiners and phrase endings further to the right. Tamil descriptions in Schiffman place attributive adjectives before their nouns. Consequently, a Basque noun followed by its descriptive material should not retain that sequence mechanically in Tamil. First identify the property being described and then arrange the target noun phrase.

This becomes particularly important when a description contains both a modifier and a comparison. The noun names the item, the adjective names the measured property, and the standard tells the reader what it exceeds. Recovering those three functions allows Tamil to change the wording and order while keeping the same claim about size or price.
