Basque to Querétaro Otomi: together is more specific than and
Basque can make joint participation explicit
Laka illustrates Ane eta Jon elkarrekin bizi dira, where Ane and Jon live with each other. Elkarrekin contributes the shared relationship rather than merely listing two people. In a Basque account about meals or travel, an explicit together expression can similarly distinguish joint participation from two separate events involving the same activity.
A Querétaro Otomi translation should preserve whether the source actually states accompaniment. A report that two colleagues both ate is compatible with separate meals; a report that one ate with the other specifies a shared episode. Do not add together just because a source sentence names two participants joined by eta.
A documented Otomi construction splits the participants
Palancar’s original study concerns San Ildefonso Tultepec Otomi in Querétaro. His introductory meal example places John before the verb and Peter after it, while describing John eating with Peter. The two actor expressions are separated, but the later person is not the food being eaten.
The analysis treats one actor as more prominent in the discourse and the accompanying actor as less prominent. It also associates the construction with eating at the same time and place. Thus an Otomi version preserving a Basque accompaniment relation need not place both names side by side as an ordinary coordinated subject.
The special construction is not ordinary coordination with extra number
Palancar contrasts a sentence about Mary and Tony talking with a third person against a sentence about Mary and Tony talking to each other. In his analysis, the special split construction can retain an understood associate even when that person is not written out. Assuming that its dual morphology simply means the two named people talk mutually produces the wrong interpretation.
In a Basque passage naming a pair and another participant, keep all their established roles. A two-person reading must not silently remove the additional participant.
Keep the regional description and spelling evidence distinct
The INALI writing norm covers Otomi materials from several states, explicitly including Querétaro, and recognizes regional variation. Its scope should not turn the San Ildefonso construction into an assumption about every variety in that publication. The research example explains one documented target system.
The norm also treats glottal writing and tone distinctions as meaningful parts of the spelling. Palancar’s extracted scholarly transcription uses a different notation and contains extraction artifacts, so reproducing those damaged characters would not provide a reliable everyday written example. The participant contrast can be explained without inventing a cleaned-up Otomi sentence.
Preserve mutual action when the Basque source says it
Laka distinguishes reciprocal elkar from reflexive expressions describing oneself. Two people acting toward each other are not simply two people performing separate self-directed actions. Combined with the accompaniment contrast, this gives three distinct readings to retain: separate participation, participation together and action directed mutually.
Choose the Otomi construction for the relation established by the Basque predicate and its modifiers. The number of names alone cannot identify which of those events the writer means.
