Basque to Hindi: why an ergative source does not determine the Hindi verb

The familiar case label hides a different distribution

Basque and Hindi both have constructions described as ergative, but that shared term does not authorize a direct exchange of markers. Laka’s Basque grammar uses Mirenek Patxi ikusten du for Miren sees Patxi. The actor has ergative marking in this imperfective construction. Therefore a Basque actor ending cannot by itself tell a translator to add Hindi ने: the Hindi predicate must first be analysed on its own terms. The event remains seeing, but the grammatical route to expressing its participants differs.

Basque auxiliaries can simultaneously register an actor, an affected participant and a recipient. Do not assume that the final Hindi verb will reproduce each of those agreement distinctions. Recover the actual people and their roles from the whole Basque clause, then construct the Hindi event with its required noun marking and verb forms. This is especially important when the Basque pronouns are absent and only agreement makes a participant recoverable. A short source sentence can still contain more participant information than its visible nouns suggest.

In a Hindi perfective, inspect the object as well as the actor

Rupert Snell’s Hindi-Urdu verb guide contrasts ordinary intransitive perfectives with transitive ergative constructions. For the latter, the logical subject takes ne and an eligible unmarked object controls agreement. His discussion of drinking tea versus water makes clear why a verb ending may reflect the drink rather than the person drinking. For Basque-to-Hindi translation, this means identifying the source object is necessary even when the actor is already completely unambiguous.

Snell additionally explains that ko marking on the targeted object blocks that object agreement, producing the default masculine singular form in the illustrated construction. A masculine-looking target verb consequently does not always identify a male actor or a masculine object. Read the accompanying Hindi marking before drawing that conclusion. In the Basque source, person and number information spread across the auxiliary may have looked sufficient; the Hindi result can instead require a separate decision about the object’s grammatical treatment. The two agreement systems preserve meaning through different mechanisms.

Completion, past time and the written verb form are separate choices

The Basic Hindi textbook presents perfective constructions with different auxiliaries, including simple, past-perfect and present-perfect examples. Its contrasting वह दौड़ा and वह दौड़ा है distinguish he ran from he has run. Thus translating a completed Basque event is not finished when a Hindi perfective participle has been selected. The surrounding temporal relation also needs to match: an event before another past event differs from an event presented with current relevance.

The same textbook lists जाना with irregular perfective forms गया and गयी/गई. Those forms are useful reminders that Hindi morphology cannot always be obtained by retaining a dictionary stem and attaching one predictable ending. For a Basque travel update, establish who went, the relevant agreement features and the event’s temporal relation before judging the Hindi output. Neither the Basque ergative label nor the presence of a completed action supplies those three decisions automatically. This avoids turning a correctly recognized journey into a wrongly timed or incorrectly agreed Hindi statement.
