Basque to Afrikaans: a painter’s portrait may identify the owner, artist or person pictured

Do not make ownership the only possible relationship

An exhibition label referring to a painter’s portrait can identify three different relationships: the painter may own the work, have painted it or appear in it. Basque-to-Afrikaans translation should preserve whichever relationship the surrounding text establishes. A possessive-looking phrase is not sufficient evidence that the named person legally owns the picture.

Itziar Laka’s Basque grammar makes this ambiguity explicit. Her example margolari ezagun horren erretratoa, that well-known painter’s portrait, can have an ownership, agency or portrayed-person reading. Different people may be responsible for painting and owning the work while the named painter is only its subject.

For an Afrikaans label, identify the intended role before replacing the Basque phrase with a more explicit description. Clarification is helpful when supported by the catalogue or conversation. Without that evidence, inventing an owner or artist would make the translation more specific than its source.

A label and a reply can express possession differently

The Afrikaans teaching presentation hosted by Afrikaans.com distinguishes possessive forms used with a named item from independent forms. It lists my, jou, sy and haar alongside myne, joune, syne and hare in statements identifying whose items they are. The form used after an item has been named need not match the form placed before its noun.

Imagine an exhibition assistant checking three photographs for a display. One is owned by a painter, another depicts that painter, and the third was made by the painter. This is an original catalogue scenario. A short reply identifying which photograph is mine settles ownership, but does not necessarily settle who created or appears in it.

Retain the role supplied by the question when interpreting such a reply. If the assistant asked who owns a photograph, a possessive answer concerns the owner. If the question asked who made it, an ambiguous possessive answer may require clarification in the actual exchange. Do not silently substitute the more convenient question during translation.

Location is another relationship to keep separate

Laka separately illustrates a Basque ko phrase with windows in or from a big house. The grammar contrasts that locative relationship with the painter-and-portrait example, while noting that ko can also express properties. Thus neither a single English of gloss nor the mere presence of a suffix provides a universal ownership test.

In the exhibition scenario, a picture from the upstairs room may identify where staff should retrieve it. That instruction does not automatically identify its owner. Keep a stated storage location distinct from the person credited as artist, the person portrayed and the person lending the picture, especially when those details appear together on a loan list.

Before printing the Afrikaans label, trace each name to its role and each location to its retrieval instruction. Check whether the text names an item directly or refers back to it through an independent possessive form. Those checks preserve the practical distinctions staff need without turning an intentionally broad Basque relationship into an unsupported ownership claim.
