Bashkir to Welsh: identify the owner before changing the first consonant

A neutral owner can require a visible distinction in Welsh

Bashkir ул can refer to a man or a woman. A possessive expression based on that reference need not identify the owner’s sex. Welsh may make the distinction visible through a possessive construction and the beginning of the possessed noun. Resolve the owner from the Bashkir conversation before judging whether a target spelling is correct.

The Learn Welsh guide contrasts ei gar e, his car, with ei char hi, her car, in the southern forms it teaches. The contrast is not simply an added final pronoun: car begins differently after the two possessive readings. A target beginning char is not necessarily a misspelled dictionary form or evidence that the car itself is female.

If the source merely identifies someone through ул, an English intermediate gloss containing his can accidentally settle a question the Bashkir did not settle. Use an established name or relationship from the actual conversation. The Welsh choice should follow the original owner, not a gender introduced while explaining the sentence in English.

Possession and location can be packed into one source noun

Bashkir adds possessive and case information to nouns. Poppe describes a suffix sequence in which the possessed noun can receive further case marking. Consequently, a source word about a father’s house may contain both who is associated with the house and whether someone is in it, going toward it or coming from it.

The Welsh possessive construction needs the owner, while a location expression must also retain the source relationship to the place. Do not let the visible mutation question distract from direction. A message saying that an item is at someone’s house has a different purpose from a message asking someone to collect it from there.

For a practical check, separate three questions before translating: what is the object or place, whose is it, and what role does it have in the event? The Bashkir ending can answer more than one. Welsh may spread those answers across several words. Requiring the target to keep the source’s compact shape would make it harder to preserve all three relationships.

A changed beginning may preserve rather than change the vocabulary

The same Welsh guide gives ei dad e for his father and ei thad hi for her father. The lexical relationship remains father in both cases. These examples show why looking up only the printed target form can be confusing: a dictionary normally lists the base form, while the sentence supplies a grammatically changed beginning.

Bashkir readers already encounter changes at suffix boundaries and a Cyrillic alphabet containing letters absent from Russian. Welsh presents a different reading task, with important information at the beginning of a word. Retain the target sequence instead of normalizing every noun back to its dictionary form.

The illustrated southern forms are learning examples, not a claim that every Welsh speaker uses exactly the same final reinforcing pronouns. Preserve the ownership contrast while allowing the selected Welsh construction to follow its own variety and register.
