Welsh to Bashkir: a possessive-looking word can belong to a passive construction

Do not read every ei as ordinary ownership

A Welsh biographical sentence can contain cael, a pronoun and a mutated verbnoun to express something happening to the subject. The National Centre for Learning Welsh’s South Wales Foundation guide illustrates this construction with birth. The pronoun corresponds to the person represented in the form of cael; it is part of the passive pattern.

The guide contrasts Cafodd e ei eni with Cafodd hi ei geni. Both concern being born, while the surrounding pronoun and mutation distinguish the reference. Treating ei as a separate statement of ownership would miss how the construction works. Nor does the appearance of cael require a Bashkir verb meaning receive in every such sentence.

For a short biography, first identify the person whose birth is being described. Then read the complete Welsh predicate as a unit. A word-for-word account of receiving something belonging to that person would not communicate the event the biography records.

Bashkir forms the relevant relationships through its own verb system

Nicholas Poppe’s Bashkir Manual describes passive and reflexive verb formation through suffixes. His account distinguishes their functions even where related suffix shapes appear. The existence of a Welsh passive does not prescribe one invariant Bashkir ending, and a reflexive-looking derivation must not be selected merely because a Welsh pronoun refers back to the subject.

Poppe also discusses attributive participles with different relationships to the noun they modify. His examples include a person who was born and a day on which somebody was born. These share the birth event but identify different things. A biographical statement and a phrase identifying a date should therefore not be collapsed into one grammatical pattern.

When a Welsh paragraph gives the person’s birth and then refers to the date, keep those two uses separate. One sentence reports an event involving the person; a following noun phrase may use that event to identify a day. The Bashkir wording must preserve which element is the topic of the current statement.

Keep grammatical reference separate from the life event

The Welsh guide’s birth examples make gender visible through the source construction. That is evidence for interpreting the Welsh reference, not a requirement to reproduce an identical alternation in Bashkir. Preserve the person’s identity through suitable target wording rather than inventing a parallel mutation or assigning ownership to the verbnoun.

The same care matters when a biography contains several people. If a preceding sentence introduces a parent, the next pronoun must be resolved from the actual paragraph. Do not automatically make the nearest named person the one born, or assume that a target suffix will repair an unresolved source reference.

Read the completed biography as a sequence of claims: whose birth is reported, which day is identified, and whether the next sentence still concerns that person. The construction should support those claims without adding a recipient, owner or self-directed action that the Welsh text never introduced.

This guide uses the documented Welsh South Wales teaching pattern and Poppe’s descriptive account of Bashkir. It offers an interpretation strategy rather than an invented Bashkir birth formula. Where a finished biographical sentence is needed, assess its idiomatic target wording in the full paragraph, with the person and event already established.
