Welsh to Malagasy: both can begin with the predicate, but the subject moves differently

A late subject is still the person acting

Welsh readers are accustomed to sentences that begin with a verb rather than a named actor. The Learn Welsh Foundation guide gives Ysgrifennodd e at Sam, he wrote to Sam, where the subject follows the initial verb. Malagasy can also begin with the predicate, but this apparent similarity should not encourage a word-for-word transfer of the Welsh order.

The Peace Corps course gives Mihinana vary aho, I eat rice, with the subject aho after the action and object. The person at the end is the eater, not the item eaten. In this direction, recognizing that both languages can be verb-initial is only a starting point: the internal sequence of actor and affected item still differs.

The fieldwork-based discussion hosted by the University of Texas describes subject-final order as the least marked pattern in relevant Malagasy clauses. It also documents alternatives with a fronted topic. A sentence beginning with a person’s name is therefore possible, but that arrangement can have a discourse function rather than simply being a freely interchangeable copy of Welsh word order.

Two different ways of highlighting the person

The typological study contrasts Malagasy topic marking with dia and focus marking with no. Its examples distinguish presenting Rasoa as the topic from identifying Rasoa as the particular person washing clothes. A Welsh source that emphasizes who acted may consequently require more than moving the translated name to the front.

Welsh itself has specialized forms of bod in emphatic and relative environments, as the Academy grammar records. Interpret whether the source introduces the topic, identifies an actor against alternatives or simply reports an event. The Malagasy particles organize these relationships in their own way; neither is a universal equivalent of a Welsh emphasis cue.

Welsh ni does not specify whether the reader joins the group

The Peace Corps pronoun table distinguishes isika, inclusive we, from izahay, exclusive we. Welsh ni does not grammatically make that same choice. A Welsh announcement about a group activity therefore needs its membership understood before selecting the Malagasy first-person plural.

A sender reporting what a team will do may exclude the recipient; the same sender arranging a shared activity may include them. This is a difference in participants, not automatically in friendliness or respect. Keeping the Welsh plural while choosing the wrong Malagasy inclusion value would change who the message invites into the action.

An adjective need not acquire a separate equivalent of bod

The Peace Corps material illustrates Mangatsiaka izy for he or she is cold, with an adjective predicate rather than a separate copular verb. Welsh often uses bod in descriptions, so an apparently missing equivalent of is in Malagasy need not be an omission.

Read the adjective and its subject as the target construction. Adding an improvised separate word to mirror each Welsh component would not improve this pattern. The comparison is specific to predicate structure: the source description remains a full assertion even when the target distributes its grammatical work differently.
