Tibetan to Querétaro Otomi: a property can require a predicate or a relative clause

A descriptive meaning does not guarantee an adjective word

Palancar’s analysis of San Ildefonso Tultepec Otomi in Querétaro argues that property concepts are expressed through verbs and nouns rather than a separate adjective class in his analysis. A Tibetan description of size or hardness should therefore be translated by finding the target construction for the property, not by assuming an adjective can simply be placed beside an Otomi noun.

The regional scope matters: the paper supplies detailed evidence for San Ildefonso, while discussing other varieties separately. It does not justify treating every Otomi form as interchangeable across the whole language group. A translated property description needs a construction appropriate to the documented variety rather than an unsourced pan-Otomi word list.

A big object can be expressed through a relative description

Palancar illustrates a phrase translated as the big iron, referring to a crane, whose internal analysis is the iron that is big. He also gives a hard stick through a relative construction describing a stick that is hard. These examples show a practical alternative to transferring an adjective position from Tibetan.

Garrett and Hill’s written Tibetan analysis distinguishes noun-plus-adjective expressions from lexical compounds. That source difference remains important here: a Tibetan adjective describing an object needs its descriptive scope retained, while a lexicalised name for equipment should not automatically be expanded into a literal physical-property description. The Otomi construction must preserve what the source phrase is doing.

A title is not merely a person with a physical quality

The Tibetan contrast blon-chen, prime minister, and blon-po chen-po, great minister, illustrates this lexical issue. If such a source phrase appears before a property description, the translator first needs to identify whether it names an office or evaluates a person. A target property predicate cannot substitute for an established role merely because one source component can mean great.

This is particularly useful in an account where an official orders a large piece of equipment. There are two different descriptive questions: which official is identified, and what property identifies the equipment. Combining them carelessly can turn an office title into praise or attach the equipment’s size to the person instead.

An observer’s knowledge is separate from the property asserted

Zeisler’s Standard Spoken Tibetan discussion distinguishes personal authority and experiential access. A Tibetan report may therefore say something about how the speaker knows a property, in addition to identifying the property itself. That epistemic dimension should not be mistaken for the Otomi choice of a property-concept construction.

A narrator may have seen an object without knowing its technical identity, or know the equipment well without describing a fresh observation. Preserve the extent of the source claim while constructing the target property expression. The resulting Otomi sentence should identify the same entity and property without strengthening a reported description into direct observation or weakening a lexical name into a speculative quality.
