Tibetan to Malagasy: seeing people is different from witnessing their activity

An observed person and an observed event are different objects of a report

A Tibetan statement can identify people the speaker saw or report an activity the speaker witnessed. Malagasy can distinguish these through the structure of a perception complement. Matt Pearson’s research contrasts a phrase denoting students who read with a clause denoting the event of those students reading.

The distinction matters even if a Tibetan passage mentions the same students and the same books in both interpretations. Seeing people who are known as readers does not necessarily mean witnessing them read at the moment of observation. A Malagasy translation should not add that witnessed event unless the source establishes it.

Demonstrative placement can change the interpretation

Pearson contrasts iretsy mpianatra namaky boky iretsy with iretsy mpianatra iretsy namaky boky. In the first expression the framing demonstrative surrounds the student description; in the second, its closure comes before the reading predicate. The resulting interpretation distinguishes an identified group from an observed reading event.

Garrett and Hill’s written Tibetan analysis likewise treats demonstratives as elements within a larger phrase structure. The translator must recover the scope of the Tibetan description before arranging the Malagasy demonstrative. Copying the apparent proximity of individual words is not enough when the target order can change what the observer is said to have perceived.

Which person and what event request different answers

Pearson illustrates a question asking which child or children were seen and distinguishes suitable person-denoting answers from an event-denoting answer. A Tibetan question requesting the identity of an observed person should therefore not receive a Malagasy answer that merely reports a whole activity without identifying the requested participant.

The converse matters too. A Tibetan question asking what happened can require an event account rather than a list of people present. In a witness exchange, preserve the information gap across both turns: whether the questioner wants to identify someone or establish an occurrence. A grammatical target answer can still answer the wrong question.

Perception evidence does not independently settle descriptive scope

Zeisler’s Standard Spoken Tibetan discussion treats experiential marking as related to perception in the described system. That source perspective helps distinguish the narrator’s perceptual access from other knowledge, but it does not automatically determine which noun modifier belongs inside a person description and which predicate reports the perceived event.

For example, a Tibetan witness may have seen a particular group and then learned from another person what the group was doing. A Malagasy construction explicitly presenting the activity as directly perceived could strengthen the account beyond its source. Keep the witness’s access to the people separate from their access to the action. The translated clause must preserve both the referent identified and the extent of the observation claimed, rather than let one target perception construction decide both without evidence.
