Tibetan to Afrikaans: personal involvement, future intention and two-person groups

The Tibetan auxiliary can say more than who performs an action

In Standard Spoken Tibetan, an egophoric auxiliary can express the speaker’s personal knowledge or involvement. Nicolas Tournadre’s grammar notes that this involvement need not belong to the grammatical subject: an owner, recipient or another complement can be relevant. An Afrikaans translation should therefore not automatically make the speaker the actor merely because the Tibetan auxiliary has an egophoric interpretation.

Tournadre illustrates a statement about someone sending the speaker a letter with a receptive egophoric auxiliary. The event still has another person as sender. For a Tibetan account of receiving something, preserve who sent it and who received it before choosing the Afrikaans pronouns. Converting personal involvement into an invented first-person subject would reverse an important relationship.

Distinguish an intended future from a prediction about another person

The Tibetan future discussion contrasts གི་ཡིན་, intentional egophoric, with assertive གི་རེད་. In the described construction, the intentional form is associated with a first-person volitional action. A source plan made by the speaker should not be flattened into a prediction whose actor or commitment is unclear.

Afrikaans often expresses future time with sal and a main verb. The Bishops language handbook contrasts present, past and future versions of an action using that auxiliary. Selecting sal may preserve futurity, but the Tibetan source still has to establish whose action is planned and whether the speaker is expressing an intention. Do not infer an extra desire merely from an auxiliary, or remove an intention solely because Afrikaans lacks an identically shaped Tibetan form.

A Tibetan dual must remain a pair in Afrikaans

Tibetan pronouns can explicitly identify two people. Tournadre gives ང་གཉིས་ for we two, distinct from a general plural. Afrikaans ons identifies a first-person group without carrying that same dual form. When exactly two participants matter, the translation must retain the pair through suitable wording or a clear antecedent rather than broaden it to an unspecified group.

The distinction concerns the participants in the particular proposition. Two people named earlier do not make every later source plural a dual, and a Tibetan dual does not imply that two objects are involved. Keep the number of speakers or actors separate from the number of things they discuss or possess.

Subject and possessive roles require different Afrikaans forms

Tibetan has ordinary and honorific pronoun registers, with usage differing between Standard Spoken Tibetan, literary language and regional varieties. Afrikaans pronouns must nevertheless be selected for their role in the target sentence. The Bishops handbook distinguishes a female subject sy from possessive haar. A respectful Tibetan reference whose gender is not specified does not supply evidence for choosing one sex-specific target reference over another.

This role distinction is particularly useful when the source egophoric relation concerns an owner rather than the actor. Recover the owner from the Tibetan possessive phrase and the actor from the predicate; do not let the auxiliary collapse them into one person. Afrikaans can express the relationship through a possessive construction while retaining the actual source subject.
