Telugu to Tamil: preserve social reference across different forms
Do not let respectful grammar change the number of people
Telugu మీరు can address several people or one person respectfully. Tamil நீங்கள் can perform a similar role, but the rest of the Tamil sentence must agree with that choice. When a translation concerns one customer, do not interpret respectful grammar as evidence of several customers. Identify the audience from the actual message.
Third-person forms are equally important. Telugu వారు can mean “they” or respectfully refer to an individual in suitable contexts. Tamil may use அவர் for a respectful singular person. The most useful translation preserves whom the writer means, rather than mechanically matching a plural-looking source with a plural target. A name mentioned earlier can resolve what a short isolated pronoun cannot.
Preserve whether the listener participates
Telugu మనం includes the person addressed; మేము excludes that person. Tamil நாம் and நாங்கள் provide a corresponding inclusive and exclusive distinction. In a shared plan, the choice tells the reader whether they are part of the intended action. Treat it as information, not as an optional stylistic variation.
A message from an office describing its internal work should not become an invitation to the recipient. A family plan that includes the reader should not sound like an announcement about somebody else’s outing. Before reusing a saved translation, check whether the participants have changed even if the basic action is identical. The appropriate group pronoun may change with the recipients.
Write a Tamil relationship, not Telugu letters in another script
Telugu నా పుస్తకం becomes Tamil என் புத்தகம், “my book.” The shared idea of possession does not require the words to resemble each other visually. Tamil and Telugu scripts have different letter inventories and spelling conventions. Select a target expression for its meaning rather than replacing each Telugu character with an approximate Tamil shape.
The same principle applies to everyday vocabulary: Telugu నీరు and Tamil தண்ணீர் both mean “water.” A sound-based transcription of the Telugu word may be useful in a quotation or pronunciation discussion, but it is not automatically the word a Tamil reader expects in a routine request. Decide whether the item is vocabulary to translate or a name to preserve.
Recheck descriptions that are packed into word endings
Both languages can express relationships through suffixes and participial constructions that English would unpack into several words. Their shared tendency does not mean all endings correspond directly. Identify which noun a description modifies and who performs its action. A phrase describing the person who sent a document must not accidentally describe the document itself.
Tamil written style and everyday conversation can differ substantially. For an official notice, coherent readable written Tamil is a useful goal; a close personal message may call for a different voice. Preserve the source’s purpose without making every line unusually literary. Check names against conventional Tamil spellings when available, and compare quantities, dates, and identifiers separately so the message remains useful outside the translation interface.
