Tamil to English: expand what a Tamil ending already tells you
A complete Tamil expression can need several English words
Tamil can attach grammatical information to a word instead of writing every relationship separately. English often needs additional words and an explicit subject. Do not judge an English translation by whether it has the same number of visible words as the Tamil. Identify the action, its participants, and its time before deciding what the English clause requires.
வந்தவர் can mean “the person who came.” A compact Tamil form can therefore become a whole English noun phrase. In a longer message, establish which person the description identifies. Expanding it too vaguely as “someone” may lose the connection to a known visitor, caller, or colleague that the original makes clear.
Respectful grammar does not always mean several people
நீங்கள் can mean respectful singular “you” or plural “you.” English uses the same basic pronoun, but surrounding statements must still refer to the correct number of people. A message addressed respectfully to one customer should not acquire “all of you” merely because the Tamil form has plural grammatical behaviour.
அவர் can respectfully refer to a single man or woman. Determine the person from the surrounding message before translating it as “he,” “she,” or a neutral alternative. Respect is part of the source, but English usually carries it through a courteous formulation rather than a separate grammatical pronoun. Repeatedly adding an honorific title can overstate an ordinary message.
Do not lose the boundary of the group
Tamil நாம் includes the person being addressed; நாங்கள் excludes that person. Both ordinarily become English “we,” so a significant relationship can become less visible. In an invitation or a task assignment, check whether the English still makes participation clear. A short addition such as “our team” may help where the intended group is already established.
Do not add an invitation if the Tamil merely reports what another group will do. Equally, do not make a shared plan sound exclusive. The right English sentence depends on the actual people involved. This distinction can matter more in a workplace message than preserving the exact placement of every Tamil word.
Understand the written voice before choosing an English one
Formal Tamil writing and everyday spoken Tamil can differ noticeably. A public statement should be translated according to what it says, not treated as an unusually elaborate version of a casual chat. A conversational message can be expressed in ordinary English without reproducing all its regional speech features as invented English dialect.
என் புத்தகம் is “my book”; the possessive relationship is straightforward even though the scripts look very different. When translating a longer passage, keep track of the owner as names are replaced by pronouns. English articles and possessives should clarify the same reference, not turn a particular book or document into an unspecified one. Finish by checking dates, quantities, and any established English name spellings against the original records rather than relying on a fresh transliteration alone.
