English to Tamil: decide who belongs in “we”
An English group can include or exclude the reader
Tamil distinguishes நாம், a “we” that includes the person addressed, from நாங்கள், which excludes that person. English usually leaves both meanings inside the same pronoun. Before translating a team message, establish whether the recipient is part of the group performing the action. Otherwise a friendly invitation can accidentally sound like a report about somebody else’s group.
For example, “We will discuss this” may describe a shared discussion with the reader or an internal meeting the reader will not attend. Those are different messages even before any vocabulary is translated. Choose the Tamil pronoun according to participation, not whichever form appears first in a dictionary. The distinction is especially useful for school notices, workplace updates, and family plans.
Respect and number are connected, but not identical
நீ is familiar singular “you”; நீங்கள் can address several people or one person respectfully. An English customer message needs a deliberate choice because its pronoun does not specify either relationship. In a first professional exchange, respectful address is a useful starting point. In a close personal conversation, the familiar form may be appropriate.
A respectful Tamil third-person form can also refer to one individual. அவர் may mean “he” or “she” with respect, rather than several people. Keep the associated verb agreement consistent. If you replace a name with a pronoun while editing, check the whole clause instead of assuming only that one word needs to change.
English relative clauses need a Tamil construction
English often puts a description after a noun using “who” or “that.” Tamil can place a participial description before the noun. “The person who came” can be வந்தவர். The source idea is retained even though the English words “person,” “who,” and “came” do not each appear as separate written units in the same order.
In a longer sentence, first identify who the description refers to. “The customer who called the manager” and “the manager whom the customer called” describe different people. A word-by-word rearrangement can attach the action to the wrong noun. Use a clear English source sentence before translating and then inspect the resulting Tamil relationship, particularly in instructions about named people.
Written Tamil and a familiar spoken voice are different targets
Tamil has a substantial distinction between formal written language and everyday speech, with regional variation within speech. A readable public explanation does not need to mimic a family conversation. Conversely, a personal text can sound distant if it is made unnecessarily literary. Choose the setting rather than measuring accuracy by whether every phrase sounds like a television conversation.
என் புத்தகம் means “my book.” Its ordinary structure does not require an English-style apostrophe or an added possessive word after every noun. Preserve simple expressions where they work. For names, amounts, and codes, check the exact information separately from the prose so a well-formed Tamil sentence still identifies the same person, date, or transaction.
