Spanish to Basque: se lo can still describe giving something to somebody else

Recover the recipient behind se

In a Spanish transfer sentence, se is not automatically a sign that the giver receives their own gift. The RAE explains that indirect-object le or les becomes se before lo, la, los or las. Its examples include replacing les in a sentence about buying sweets. Before translating such a sequence into Basque, identify what the object pronoun represents and which person or people the recipient expression represents.

An original Spanish conversation might first name two neighbours and a spare key, then report that the speaker gave it to them. A following se lo sequence can retain those neighbours as recipients. Reading se as oneself would send the key back to the giver and change the event, even if a dictionary supplies plausible equivalents for the individual pronouns.

This also means se alone does not reveal whether one neighbour or several received the item. Recover that number from the earlier reference. Do not let the single written form persuade you that the target recipient must be singular, or let a plural object pronoun stand in for missing information about the people.

Basque expresses the relationships through its own construction

Laka’s grammar, published by the University of the Basque Country, describes dative marking with three-participant giving and bringing constructions. It illustrates zazpi gizoni eman diet lana, giving work to seven men. The recipient phrase and the auxiliary belong to one grammatical construction; they are not duplicate mentions of extra recipients.

The same discussion gives etxeko txakurrari hezur bat eman diozu, about giving a bone to the household dog. This provides a useful contrast with the first example: identifying the recipient is separate from identifying the thing given. The translation must preserve both, even when information expressed by separate Spanish words is organized differently in Basque.

For the key exchange, check the recipient number and the single key independently. A target that gives several keys to one neighbour does not preserve the event merely because it mentions the right people and the right kind of object. Likewise, retaining the object while dropping the intended recipient leaves the practical handover incomplete.

Not every target dative marks a recipient

Laka also lists Basque verbs whose two-participant constructions require a dative phrase, including begiratu, looking at. Its snake-and-bird example contains no gift passing to the bird. A dative ending therefore cannot be interpreted as proof that the target adds a receiving participant to every event. Read it with the selected verb.

This matters when a Spanish exchange shifts from handing over a key to looking at a damaged lock. The first event has a transferred item and recipient; the second concerns attention directed toward something. Forcing both into one transfer analysis would add a relationship that the source never states.

Review each clause with a short event description: who acts, what is affected and whether anything is actually transferred. Then reconnect the pronouns to the named participants across the exchange. Spanish se has several grammatical uses, and Basque dative marking occurs in several constructions. Matching either form to one universal meaning would miss precisely the distinctions that determine who gets the key.
