Mexican Spanish to Ukrainian: quedamos de vernos records an agreement, not a completed visit

A past agreement can concern a future meeting

In Mexican Spanish, Quedamos de vernos el lunes can report an agreement to meet on Monday. The Diccionario del español de México records quedar de and quedar en for people agreeing to do something. The past form can locate the agreement before the present while the planned meeting still lies ahead. A Ukrainian translation should not report that the meeting already happened.

Consider an exchange sent on Friday: two people agreed yesterday that they would meet next Monday. There are two events and two dates. Treating both verbs as descriptions of yesterday would erase the appointment; moving the agreement itself to Monday would erase the fact that the arrangement is already settled.

This differs from a report that the people met on Monday and stayed to talk. The dictionary separately records quedarse for remaining somewhere or spending time doing something. A familiar form of quedar therefore does not, by itself, establish either an appointment or an actual stay. Read the construction with its following words.

A Ukrainian perfective form can point forward

Marta Jenkala’s Ukrainian reading course warns that present forms and perfective future forms can have similar stems and endings. Its examples distinguish відвідую, a present form for visiting, from відвідаю, a perfective future form. This is a reason to check the event’s time rather than identify every compact target verb as present.

For the Friday appointment, the Ukrainian wording must preserve the future meeting even though the Spanish agreement is reported in the past. A correctly recognized future form helps prevent a reader from interpreting the target as a current habitual visit. The course’s visiting forms illustrate the grammatical distinction; they are not supplied as a complete translation of the appointment sentence.

The lesson also explains that a prefix can belong to a verb’s lexical meaning rather than automatically mark it perfective. Removing a prefix to make a target verb look simpler can change the chosen word, and adding one is not a general procedure for making any verb future. The appropriate form belongs to the particular verb.

Keep the commitment separate from its outcome

An agreed meeting can later be cancelled or missed. A follow-up saying that the arrangement remains in place reports the status of the plan; it does not confirm attendance. Conversely, an account of a completed meeting should not be weakened into a plan that may still be outstanding.

The Ukrainian course recommends using context and time expressions when similar-looking forms create uncertainty. For a translated appointment, a named weekday and an explicit relationship to today can be particularly informative. If the Spanish conversation leaves which Monday unclear, resolve that date rather than assume a verb ending can identify the intended calendar week.

Before sending the translation, distinguish the agreement date, the planned encounter and any later report about what occurred. Preserve cancellation or confirmation if the source includes it. The useful result tells the Ukrainian reader whether there is an appointment to keep, instead of allowing Spanish past morphology or a present-looking Ukrainian future to make the meeting appear already completed.
