Mexican Spanish to Tatar: acaba de llegar tells you when, not how the speaker knows

Recent arrival is not automatically witnessed arrival

In a Mexican Spanish delivery update, El paquete acaba de llegar places the arrival close to the present. The Diccionario del español de México records acabar de with an infinitive for a completed action, especially a recent one. That construction does not identify whether the writer saw the delivery, received a telephone call or read an update from the recipient.

Tatar has grammatical resources concerned with information source. Universal Dependencies identifies икән as a non-firsthand evidential particle. Thus a target choice may concern how the event became known, not simply whether the package arrived recently. Adding such a reading merely because the Spanish contains acaba de would confuse two different parts of the message.

For an original example, a shopkeeper can watch a courier unload a box and immediately send an arrival notice. Another employee can send the same Spanish wording from another building after receiving the shopkeeper’s message. The arrival time may match while the employees’ access to the event differs.

A named report should keep its attribution

Compare that bare arrival notice with Según la recepcionista, el paquete acaba de llegar. The second explicitly identifies a receptionist as the source. If the Tatar message turns it into the writer’s own observed delivery, the recipient loses a useful distinction about whom to ask for the parcel.

Makhmutova and Lutfullina’s study of Tatar evidentiality discusses examples accompanied by named or anonymous sources. Their analysis distinguishes non-firsthand meanings from a narrower category containing only hearsay. They also warn against interpreting the contrasting, unmarked past form as necessarily firsthand. These distinctions support attention to the source of a report without requiring a simplistic one-to-one translation rule.

For the parcel, a message from a receptionist and an inference from an empty loading bay are different kinds of support. Neither should silently become I watched it arrive. Conversely, the absence of an overt source phrase in Spanish is not permission to invent a receptionist, tracking system or witness. Preserve the evidence that is actually supplied.

Completion, recency and source answer separate questions

A follow-up could say that the package arrived yesterday but the employee has only just learned about it. In that situation the new information is recent; the arrival is not. A translation that moves just from learning to arrival changes the delivery timeline and may create an incorrect expectation about where the courier is now.

Likewise, a notification can report an arrival while leaving open whether anyone checked the contents. Seeing a sealed box arrive does not establish that every ordered item is inside. Keep the confirmed event separate from further conclusions, especially when summarizing several short messages into one translated update.

For a useful Tatar version, identify what happened, when it happened and what the Spanish writer says about learning it. Those answers can be stated in separate clauses if the input provides them. Do not treat an evidential expression as another word for recently, and do not turn a neutral past into an invented eyewitness claim. This preserves both the delivery facts and the limits of the report.
