Mexican Spanish to Sindhi: an instruction is not always a dictionary infinitive

Identify the job of a short Spanish verb

A Mexican Spanish document may present an action as a heading, an instruction, or a sentence addressed to a reader. Those uses should not automatically receive the same Sindhi form. FundéuRAE distinguishes a dictionary-style infinitive from an infinitive used with directive force in notices addressed to the general public, such as No tocar. The visible Spanish ending alone does not reveal whether the text merely names an action.

For a Sindhi translation, first decide whether the reader is being asked to act or whether the word labels an activity. A form suitable for naming writing is not necessarily a finished request to write. Conversely, turning a section heading into an imperative may make a description sound like an order that the source never issued.

Sindhi teaching materials distinguish write from to write

The Sindhi Language Authority’s verb lesson contrasts لِکُ, write, with لِکَڻُ, to write. It also contrasts هَلُ, walk, with هَلَڻ, to walk. These attested pairs demonstrate why retaining an infinitive ending in every target line is not a harmless dictionary convention. The lesson presents the shorter root forms as usable in imperatives.

Its table has misleading singular and plural column headings, but its actual English glosses distinguish imperatives from infinitives. The forms should therefore not be interpreted as proving that to write is a plural command. For this translation direction, use the meaningful contrast shown by the examples rather than allowing a table label to assign an unintended number to the audience.

A Mexican plural audience is not automatically ceremonial

The RAE explains that ustedes addresses plural listeners in the Americas in familiar as well as formal settings. A Mexican instruction addressed to several people may therefore be ordinary group address, not a demand for the highest possible Sindhi formality. The audience’s actual size and the relationship to the writer need to be distinguished.

The elementary Sindhi imperative examples above do not supply every plural or respectful construction. They show a lexical and grammatical contrast, not a complete conversion table for Mexican ustedes. A translation should preserve the group being addressed while selecting a target request appropriate to that audience. It should not infer a polite plural solely from an infinitive ending or copy an elementary singular example into every group notice.

A public prohibition has its own purpose

FundéuRAE accepts infinitive directives addressed to an unspecified public while distinguishing them from ordinary imperatives to particular listeners. Thus a Mexican sign prohibiting touching is already a directive even without a visibly conjugated verb. Its Sindhi translation should preserve the prohibition rather than become a neutral heading about touching.

At the same time, the positive root examples from the Sindhi lesson do not establish how to construct a negative prohibition. Adding a guessed equivalent of Spanish no to a dictionary root would go beyond the evidence. For this pair, preserve the source’s instruction, audience and polarity together, and distinguish those decisions from choosing the infinitive used to look up the verb.
