Mexican Spanish to Shona: distinguish todavía from a future prediction

Continuing now is different from happening later

When a Mexican message says that somebody todavía does something, establish whether it describes an activity or state persisting at a reference time. The Diccionario del español de México illustrates this temporal use with Todavía está dormido. A Shona translation should preserve the persistence of sleeping, rather than replace it with a new prediction that the person will sleep. That difference affects explanations of why somebody cannot answer or leave at present.

The same Mexican dictionary records todavía with comparisons, as in an even better performance, and y todavía introducing an additional surprising circumstance. Those meanings should not automatically receive a continuation construction either. An intensification of quality does not say that an activity remains unfinished. Identify what todavía contributes before selecting Shona grammar: elapsed time with persistence, a greater degree, or an additional circumstance. The verb alone cannot tell you which relationship the Mexican writer intended.

A familiar future marker is not an all-purpose translation key

The Foreign Service Institute’s Shona Basic Course introduces -cha- with future reference and time expressions, but explicitly notes that with some stems the form corresponds to still in English. This is a useful warning against judging output through a single gloss. Seeing a form associated with future reference does not, by itself, prove that a Mexican continuation statement was mistranslated; the particular stem and construction must be read.

The course is grounded in specific speakers’ varieties, with systematic adjustments towards more central varieties, and acknowledges variation. Its observation does not license adding -cha- to any verb whenever the Mexican source contains todavía. Nor does it mean that every future sentence implies persistence. Treat the textbook’s overlapping interpretations as evidence that the mapping is construction-dependent. A sentence about a person’s present availability requires the right temporal reading, rather than a superficial match between a Spanish adverb and a Shona segment.

Compare a documented persistence construction with a future one

Derek Nurse’s comparative tense-and-aspect materials provide a more explicit contrast in their Chi-shona section. The matrix gives ndi-chí-ri ku-dy-á for I am still eating, alongside ndi-chá-énd-a for I will go. The persistence example includes the be construction and an infinitive; it is not just an unanalysed replacement of Spanish todavía by a future prefix. The study also represents a future progressive with an auxiliary followed by the ongoing-event construction.

For Mexican source messages, separate whether the activity is ongoing from when that activity is located. Still eating now, still eating at a later point, and planning to leave are different claims even if all concern the same appointment. Nurse’s matrix distinguishes those combinations, while its notes acknowledge dialect variation and dependence on the underlying grammatical descriptions. The forms are therefore comparison points, not a complete production rule for every speaker. Preserve the source event and its time together: a correct persistence meaning with the wrong activity or reference time can still misstate why the person is delayed.
