Mexican Spanish to Sesotho: count garments before interpreting pantalones as several

Pantalones can refer to one garment

The Diccionario del español de México explicitly warns that the plural pantalones can refer to one garment or several. Its examples include pantalones cortos alongside singular descriptions of a garment. In Mexican Spanish to Sesotho translation, an order or packing instruction therefore needs an item count independent of the Spanish plural ending. Treating every pantalones as several garments can change how much clothing somebody is asked to buy or bring.

The same entry records llevar los pantalones as exercising authority, especially in a household, and a popular expression about acting energetically or responsibly. Those are not ordinary instructions about wearing or fastening clothing. Identify the literal garment sense before counting anything. A family comment using the authority expression should not acquire a Sesotho clothing quantity merely because a dictionary supplied the noun for trousers. Conversely, an actual purchase request should retain the intended number of garments rather than a figurative interpretation.

A pair expression does not always settle the count

The RAE’s discussion of lexical duals distinguishes paired items from objects whose plural form can designate one unit. It notes that un par de pantalones can refer to a single garment or to two garments. The ordinary English gloss a pair of trousers therefore cannot safely resolve an ambiguous Mexican source by itself. Moving through English can preserve, rather than eliminate, the quantity problem.

The same grammatical explanation contrasts this with expressions that necessarily identify several garments, including algunos pantalones. Read the actual determiner and the surrounding purchase or inventory context instead of deriving quantity from the noun ending alone. For a Sesotho rendering, a genuine request for multiple items should remain multiple; a single two-legged garment should not become two independent garments. If the source leaves the count open, the translation should not silently turn a possible interpretation into a definite commercial quantity.

Sesotho clothing nouns follow their own class patterns

Katherine Demuth’s grammatical sketch gives bo-rikhwe for trousers in noun class 14 and ma-rikhwe as its plural in class 6. She discusses this borrowed noun as an example of assignment influenced by its form, rather than a simple rule that every clothing noun belongs to one semantic class. The attested pair provides a target-language distinction to check once the Mexican source’s quantity has been established. It is not a reason to copy Spanish singular and plural morphology mechanically.

Demuth also explains that noun class controls agreement across adjectives, demonstratives, possessives, and verbal marking. Consequently, selecting the clothing noun is only part of translating the phrase: related words must fit its Sesotho class. Spanish masculine agreement with pantalón does not determine that class. Her examples use a modified Lesotho orthography and form part of a selective grammatical sketch, not a complete modern shopping phrasebook. For this direction, retain the garment count first and then its target agreement; changing one to imitate Spanish form can spoil an otherwise accurate clothing description.
