Mexican Spanish to Romanian: largo and larg can describe different clothing dimensions

Long sleeves are not necessarily loose sleeves

In Mexican Spanish, manga larga describes sleeve length. Romanian larg can describe width, spaciousness or clothing that is loose relative to the wearer. The visual resemblance between largo and larg can therefore conceal a practical difference: a customer asking for longer sleeves may receive advice about a looser fit instead.

The Diccionario del español de México records largo for length and gives clothing examples. Romanian dictionary entries reproduced by dexonline distinguish larg from lung, the length-related word. These are not interchangeable measurements. A translation should establish whether the source discusses length, width or overall size before selecting the adjective.

A fit complaint is more precise than saying an item is bad

Compare Las mangas me quedan largas with Las mangas me quedan anchas. The first says the sleeves extend too far; the second says their width is excessive. A tailor would make different alterations for each, shortening a sleeve or reducing its width as appropriate. Romanian wording should preserve that distinction rather than reduce both complaints to a general statement that the garment does not fit.

Los pantalones me quedan grandes can be less specific: the trousers are too large for the wearer, without necessarily identifying only length or only width. A translator should not narrow that complaint to a single measurement unless the surrounding message does. Photographs or measurements may explain the problem, but the adjective grandes alone does not supply them.

The Mexican dictionary records quedar for adjusting to a person’s size or shape and for looking good on them. Thus Te queda bien can praise appearance as well as fit. A Romanian translation that always interprets bien as correct physical dimensions could remove a compliment about how the garment looks.

Preserve the requested change rather than the familiar spelling

Lo quiero más largo asks for greater length. Lo quiero más ancho asks for greater width. In an alteration request, retaining más is important: the speaker asks for a change relative to the current garment, not merely a description of its present dimensions. Romanian needs the appropriate dimension together with that comparison.

A clothing label such as falda larga identifies a style by length and does not imply that the skirt is oversized for every wearer. Conversely, a loose-cut garment may be intentionally wide without being long. The target should keep product design separate from an individual customer’s complaint about a particular fit.

Finally, largo can describe time in Spanish: una espera larga concerns duration, not the physical width of a waiting area. The Romanian choice should follow that temporal meaning rather than the clothing interpretation developed earlier. In a shopping conversation, distinguishing sleeve length, overall size, flattering appearance and waiting time prevents one familiar-looking adjective from taking over several unrelated practical decisions.
