Mexican Spanish to Maithili: commissioning work does not make the customer its performer

Separate sending an object from arranging a service

A Mexican Spanish message with mandar can describe sending something or arranging for somebody else to do work. When translating into Maithili, identify the customer, the person performing the task and the affected object. A customer who commissions a repair should not become the person who personally carries it out.

El Colegio de México’s dictionary distinguishes commissioning work from giving an order, exercising authority and sending someone or something to a destination. A phrase about mandar arreglar therefore needs interpretation as an arrangement for repair, while a phrase about sending an item concerns its movement. Both events can occur in one service request, but they are not the same event.

For an original curtain order, a customer may send fabric to a workshop and arrange for a tailor to cut it. Retain both stages if the message mentions them. Delivering the fabric does not establish that the cutting is complete, and commissioning the cutting does not mean the customer held the scissors.

Maithili causative forms must be interpreted with their participants

Smriti Choudhary’s Maithili study distinguishes a person reading from a construction in which another person causes that reading. Its examples also show an indirect arrangement with an additional participant. For this translation direction, the important relationship is who initiates the activity and who actually performs it, rather than how many separate words the target uses.

The study cautions against assuming that visibly different causative forms always describe different participant structures. Its cloth-cutting examples allow two forms with the same interpretation involving a tailor. That observation concerns the analysed verbs and material; it does not make every causative form freely interchangeable throughout Maithili.

In the curtain order, identify whether the customer spoke directly to the tailor or asked a coordinator to arrange the work. Preserve a named coordinator if the Spanish source includes one. Conversely, do not add an intermediary solely because the target form looks more elaborate than a simple verb. The source’s actual service arrangement supplies the participants.

Keep the instruction’s content and the work’s status

An order to shorten curtains and an order to make new curtains require different actions. If the Spanish writer merely asks for a quotation, the translation should not turn that enquiry into authorisation to begin. State the requested dimensions and the stage of the arrangement before relying on a short commissioning expression.

For the workshop example, keep the sample, the fabric to be cut and the finished curtains distinct. A customer can send a sample while retaining the main fabric at home. A translation that treats the sample as the material authorised for cutting could prompt the wrong task, even while correctly identifying the customer and tailor.

When saving the Maithili message, label it as a quotation enquiry, commissioning instruction or completion report. Record who performs the work and whether anybody arranges it on the customer’s behalf. On reuse, check those roles alongside the object and requested action. A familiar causative pattern is useful only when it preserves the service relationship and does not invent approval, delivery or completion.
