Mexican Spanish to Irish: ahorita does not promise a fixed delay

The same adverb can place an event differently

Mexican Spanish ahorita can refer to the present moment, a short time ahead, or when something becomes possible. The Diccionario del español de México records this range. An Irish translation that always turns it into an unequivocal “immediately” could create a stronger commitment than the source speaker made, especially in an informal answer about finishing a task.

The opposite automatic assumption is equally risky. Ahorita no puedo can describe an inability now; postponing it to an unspecified later period would change the scope of the statement. The source’s verb, negation and surrounding exchange help establish which portion of the word’s range is being used.

Irish now and after a while are not one fixed substitution

The Irish dictionary Foclóir Gaeilge–Béarla records anois for now and anois láithreach for an immediate interpretation. It separately records ar ball with uses referring to a little while ago or after a while. These options show why selecting an Irish expression requires identifying the source event’s temporal relationship rather than treating ahorita as a unit with one permanently fixed duration.

Compare Ahorita estoy en casa with Ahorita voy a salir. The first locates a state at the current reference time; the second introduces an impending departure. Rendering both as a future delay would wrongly move the present location forward. Rendering both as an instantaneous event would misrepresent the state as an action happening at a single point.

In Ahorita termino, estoy guardando el archivo, the explanation suggests a task nearing its end. It does not specify thirty seconds or five minutes. Adding either figure in Irish would invent precision. The useful distinction is between an immediate or near completion and a quantified deadline, which the Spanish source has not supplied.

Do not convert a conversational answer into a schedule

Ahorita, cuando termine esta llamada ties the proposed action to the end of another activity. If the call lasts longer than expected, the source has not necessarily broken an explicit clock-time promise. The Irish translation should preserve the dependency on finishing the call rather than replace it with a definite minute of departure.

The Irish ar ball itself has more than one temporal use in the dictionary. It therefore should not become a universal replacement that supposedly solves every Mexican ambiguity. The relevant clause must still indicate whether the reference is to what just happened or what will happen shortly. A dictionary gloss is not a substitute for the event structure.

In a practical exchange about collecting an order, distinguish its current status, the expected next action and any genuinely stated deadline. Ahorita está listo and Ahorita lo preparo need not describe the same stage: one can describe readiness while the other describes preparation still to be done. Irish wording should preserve that difference without upgrading a flexible conversational time expression into a guaranteed completion time.
