Mexican Spanish to Dutch: ando buscando does not necessarily describe walking

An ongoing activity can use a movement verb without a route

Ando buscando trabajo tells a Mexican Spanish listener about a search for employment. It need not describe somebody walking while submitting applications. The Diccionario del español de México records andar for being engaged in an activity, separately from literal movement. A Dutch translation that automatically includes walking could add a physical action absent from the message.

Dutch also combines position or movement verbs with an activity: the original LearnDutch lesson gives Ik loop te bellen for making a call while walking, and Ik zit te lezen for reading while sitting. The resemblance to Spanish andar plus a gerund is useful, but it does not establish that every Spanish andar requires Dutch lopen.

Separate the search from the way it is carried out

Compare Ando buscando mis llaves with Voy caminando y buscando mis llaves. The first can simply report the speaker’s current search. The second explicitly combines walking and searching. If the person is looking through messages to locate a lost key, describing a walk would misrepresent the practical situation.

The same distinction appears in Ando trabajando desde casa. The phrase concerns an activity taking place at home; andar does not require the worker to pace through the rooms. A suitable Dutch activity construction must fit that stated setting, rather than introduce movement because the Spanish auxiliary also has a dictionary meaning involving steps.

When a posture is explicit, it carries additional information. Estoy sentado leyendo can support a sitting-and-reading construction; Estoy leyendo by itself leaves the posture unspecified. The Dutch lesson demonstrates that position verbs can present activity together with bodily position. A translator should therefore distinguish details that the source supplies from details merely plausible in a scene.

Some andar expressions do not contain an activity at all

Ando cansado presents a current condition, not a continuous act of tiring somebody or walking tiredly. Ando sin dinero likewise concerns the speaker’s financial situation. These cannot be interpreted through the same gerund construction as ando buscando, because no gerund follows. The complement helps establish which meaning of andar is involved.

In Ando de repartidor, the dictionary’s occupational use of andar is relevant: the speaker is working in a delivery role at this stage. Turning it into a statement about walking deliveries would add a transport method. The delivery might be made by motorcycle, bicycle or on foot, but that information is not supplied by the verb alone.

Literal movement can still coexist with an activity, as in Ando por el centro buscando una farmacia. Here the location and the search jointly describe what is happening. The Dutch wording should preserve the downtown setting and the purpose without forcing every Mexican use of andar into that same scene. The essential distinction is between an ongoing search, a stated physical route, and a temporary condition or occupation.
