Mexican Spanish to Dogri: separate youthful reference, affection, and grammatical agreement

Chamaco does not always specify the same age or family relationship

The Diccionario del español de México lists chamaco as a popular noun for a child, an adolescent, or someone’s child. It also records an adjectival use describing someone as very young. These readings matter for Dogri translation because identifying a young person differs from asserting parenthood. A Mexican Spanish reference to the chamacos in a public square does not establish that they are all the speaker’s children.

The dictionary’s Mariana tiene dos chamacos, by contrast, illustrates the family-related use. Preserve that relationship where the source supplies it, without automatically importing it into every occurrence of the word. Likewise, an adjectival description of how young someone was at an earlier event is not necessarily a label for their current age. Before selecting a Dogri noun or adjective, determine whether the Mexican sentence identifies a person, states a family relationship, or predicates youth at a particular time. Those are lexical and semantic decisions before they become agreement decisions.

A diminutive can add an evaluation rather than a measurable size

The Spanish academy explains that appreciative suffixes can express size, attenuation, closeness, affection, or disparagement. They do not simply instruct the translator to add a word meaning small. Its mesita example illustrates that the derived form remains a noun, while the suffix adds evaluative meaning. Mexican forms such as chamaquito must therefore be interpreted in their sentence rather than reduced to a mechanical base-word-plus-size formula.

For Dogri, preserve any youth or smallness that the source genuinely describes, but do not invent a physical measurement from the suffix alone. An affectionate family recollection can be distorted if every Spanish diminutive becomes an objective claim that the person was tiny. The opposite reduction also loses information: replacing every expressive form with a neutral target noun can erase the speaker’s attitude. Separate the person being identified from the evaluation attached to that reference before choosing the target wording.

Dogri agreement follows its own adjective class

Sawhney’s Dogri morphology study distinguishes adjectives that modify a noun from adjectival predicates. It illustrates t͡ʃəŋɡ-ɑ d͡ʒɑɡət̪ for a good boy and t͡ʃəŋɡ-i kuɽi for a good girl. These are examples of target gender agreement, not translations of chamaco. Once the appropriate Dogri description has been selected, its form must agree according to the target construction rather than inherit the Mexican word’s ending.

The study limits declinability to particular adjective classes and documents gender, number, and direct-versus-oblique distinctions. It also shows that a predicative adjective can occur on either side of the copula, with an emphasis difference in the illustrated pair. A Mexican Spanish description placed after a copular verb therefore does not prescribe one invariant Dogri order. Retain who is being described, whether the description applies to one person or several, and whether the source adds emphasis. Expressive Spanish suffixes and ordinary Dogri agreement solve different problems; neither can substitute for the other.
