Rundi to English: follow the noun-class agreement back to its owner
A changing prefix can change the number of participants
Rundi, also commonly called Kirundi, forms many singular/plural pairs through prefixes rather than an English s ending. Igitabo is a book, while ibitabo are books. The corresponding agreement on a demonstrative or verb can change as well. Read that agreement before deciding whether English needs it or they, this or these.
This is useful in an instruction about collecting books or returning documents. Several words can refer to the same noun-class choice without introducing several new objects. Conversely, a plural marker should not vanish merely because the English noun stem looks identical in a quick dictionary lookup. Preserve the actual number of items through the whole request.
The verb can supply a subject English must express
Kirundi verbal prefixes identify participants and can make a standalone verb complete in context. “Barakora” can be “They are working” or “They work.” English needs they even where the source does not repeat a separate subject noun. A later clause can continue referring to the same people through agreement rather than a new name.
The English progressive-versus-habitual decision comes from the message. A statement about what the group does every day should not automatically become a report of an activity happening now. Keep a word about today, usually, or a scheduled task attached to the action it qualifies when choosing the English construction.
English be needs an interpretation of state versus place
Kirundi uses different constructions for identifying or describing something and for locating it. The short ni and its negative si are important in relevant identity statements, but they are not a universal replacement for every English is. Read what relationship is asserted before reconstructing the English clause.
A statement identifying a person as a teacher differs from one locating that teacher in an office. English can use is in both, while the Kirundi source gives different grammatical signals. Preserve those signals as a distinction in meaning, not as extra literal words placed into the English sentence.
An unmarked written form may not contain every spoken distinction
Kirundi is tonal, while ordinary writing often leaves tone unmarked. A short isolated word can therefore require its actual sentence to resolve the intended reading. Do not infer a tense or lexical sense solely from an English-looking sequence of letters when the source leaves a tonal distinction implicit.
Rundi and Kinyarwanda are closely related, but a familiar form from one resource is not permission to replace the source standard. Check the actual Kirundi wording, especially short references and local expressions. English articles also need reconstruction from reference: a noun-class prefix is not automatically a separate the. Identify whether the item is newly introduced or already known in the exchange.
