English to Rundi: pluralize the agreement, not only the noun
One book and several books reorganize the target phrase
English normally adds s to book to make books. Rundi, also called Kirundi, uses igitabo for a book and ibitabo for books. The change also affects associated demonstrative and verbal agreement. Translating the plural noun alone while leaving the rest of the phrase singular produces an inconsistent target.
For a collection request, establish the head noun and actual quantity before composing the whole phrase. This prevents a message about several books from becoming an instruction about one item. Noun-class agreement also helps identify later references, so a follow-up sentence must continue tracking the same object rather than select an arbitrary equivalent of English it or they.
Choose whether work is habitual or happening now
“The boy is working” can be “Umuhungu arakora” in a suitable present context. A related form can also describe ordinary repeated work, so the wider sentence matters. Preserve an explicit today, every day, or another time expression instead of assuming one English tense name settles all target choices.
Kirundi verbs can identify the subject through prefixes. A source with several English pronouns may therefore not need a separate repeated target pronoun for each one. Build the actual sentence and keep the same actor across clauses. Do not remove a person’s name where two possible actors would otherwise share an unclear reference.
Identify a person differently from locating them
English is covers both identification and location. Kirundi ni serves relevant identity or descriptive statements, with si as its negative, but a location normally needs another construction. A sentence saying that somebody is a teacher should not be translated with the same unexamined pattern as saying that the teacher is at the office.
The distinction is especially practical in introductions and arrival updates. First decide what the English predicate claims: a role, a characteristic, a current place, or possession. Then choose the Rundi construction. A word-for-word replacement of every be can create a grammatically plausible-looking message that asserts the wrong relationship.
Written simplicity must not erase Rundi’s own distinctions
Kirundi is tonal, although ordinary writing often omits tone marks. Do not improvise accents on a pronunciation aid without verification, and do not assume that an unmarked Latin spelling tells an English speaker exactly how to pronounce a message. A reading aid should remain separate from the written text intended for the recipient.
The target is Rundi rather than its close relative Kinyarwanda. Shared noun-class structures are useful background, but they do not make every vocabulary item or construction interchangeable. English a and the also have no direct article to copy before every noun. Preserve reference through the appropriate Rundi phrase, demonstrative, or description only where its meaning is actually required.
