English to Punjabi: use Gurmukhi and keep agreement intact
Check which Punjabi writing system your reader expects
This Punjabi selection uses Gurmukhi, which is written from left to right. Punjabi is also written in Shahmukhi, an Arabic-based script used by many readers in Pakistan. A person can understand spoken Punjabi while being unable to read the script produced here. Establish the recipient’s literacy needs before judging the result by language name alone.
ਪਾਣੀ means “water” in Gurmukhi. A Roman spelling such as pani may help somebody recognise the pronunciation, but it is not the same thing as providing Shahmukhi text. Script conversion and translation solve different problems. If a recipient needs another writing system, choose a workflow that explicitly supports it rather than manually replacing a few letters in the output.
English does not tell you a Punjabi noun’s gender
Punjabi assigns grammatical gender to ordinary objects as well as living beings. ਘਰ, “house,” is masculine, while ਕੁਰਸੀ, “chair,” is feminine. Those categories affect parts of the surrounding sentence. They do not describe whether a house or chair belongs to a man or woman.
When reviewing a descriptive message, check the noun together with its adjective and verb. Do not correct an unfamiliar ending merely because the English equivalent shows no gender. Also avoid assuming a word’s final vowel proves its gender: useful patterns exist, but there are exceptions. An established noun entry or a complete usage example is safer than a universal spelling shortcut.
Number and sentence role can change the word
ਮੁੰਡਾ means “boy,” while ਮੁੰਡੇ can be a direct plural, “boys,” or a form required by another grammatical context. English often communicates such relationships through separate words rather than a visible noun ending. Read the whole Punjabi phrase before deciding that a noun has been accidentally changed.
Punjabi frequently puts relationship markers after nouns and the main verb later in the clause than English does. A translation that does not preserve English order can still be the natural one. For a label such as “customer payment confirmation,” first establish who is confirming what, then express that relationship clearly instead of lining up dictionary equivalents for the English nouns.
A message for one speaker may need another form for somebody else
Punjabi verbs and many adjectives participate in gender and number agreement. An English first-person statement can leave the speaker’s gender unstated while a natural Punjabi form makes a choice. When preparing a reusable response, note whose voice it represents rather than saving one version as though every speaker could use it unchanged.
Keep regional and conversational variation in perspective. A colloquial auxiliary can differ from the form expected in standard public writing without making the sentence meaningless. For a notice or business email, consistent readable Gurmukhi is a practical target. Keep names and reference codes exact, and check the finished text in the application where the reader will receive it; font problems should be addressed as display problems rather than by deleting vowel signs.
