Burmese to English: read the final elements before choosing the verb phrase
Small elements after the verb shape the event
Burmese places useful grammatical information after a verb. Northern Illinois University’s introductory grammar gives နေ with ongoing action, ချင် with wanting to act, and နိုင် with ability. English often expresses corresponding meanings earlier in the verb phrase. Read those elements before deciding that the source merely says someone performs an action.
The example ဘယ်သူ လာချင်သလဲ asks who wants to come. Rendering it as who comes loses the wish expressed by ချင်. In a travel arrangement, a preference is different from an established plan. A fluent English translation should keep that difference even when it needs several words to express what Burmese packages compactly.
English question order needs rebuilding
The source’s question word and final element cooperate to make the question. The lesson’s pattern with ဘယ်သူ and a final လဲ does not require a word-for-word English match at the same positions. Form an ordinary English question after identifying exactly what information is requested.
For questions involving နဲ့, the university lesson identifies it as with following the person expression. English usually needs with in front of its complement, or in another natural question position. Reversing the relationship can turn a question about a companion into one about a place or object. Check which person the postposition belongs to before smoothing the wording.
Politeness may be carried by tone rather than a title
ပါ occurs in polite Burmese statements, including ကျွန်တော် ဆရာပါ, I am a teacher, in the beginning lesson. English does not need to append an independent politeness word to every such sentence. A courteous tone can preserve the function without making a simple introduction sound unnaturally elaborate.
The polite endings ခင်ဗျာ and ရှင် are associated in the lesson with male and female speakers respectively. Do not use them as evidence that the addressee must be a man or woman. English Sir or Madam should follow the actual relationship and context, not an automatic assumption about the person receiving the message.
Sentence endings are part of the evidence
The mark ။ closes Burmese sentences much as an English period does. Keep those boundaries when copying a source passage for translation, because final particles and punctuation help identify how the statement is organized. A screenshot transcription that drops the end of a line may also lose an element needed for the correct English reading.
Before forwarding the English, compare each clause for action, wish, ability, and question force. A confident statement should not replace an expression of desire, and a polite form should not introduce an unsupported title. Where the copied text is incomplete, recover the missing ending from the sender or original document rather than choosing a plausible English sentence solely because it reads smoothly.
