English to Burmese: put politeness and verb meaning in the right place
Politeness need not become an extra English-style clause
Burmese can express politeness through particles at the end of a sentence. The introductory university lesson gives ကျွန်တော် ဆရာပါ, I am a teacher, with ပါ in the sentence. An English source does not need to contain a separate word equivalent to that particle for a polite Burmese statement to use it.
The lesson also distinguishes the polite final forms ခင်ဗျာ and ရှင် by the speaker conventionally using them: male and female respectively. They should not be selected simply by looking at the recipient’s gender. When preparing a first-person message for someone else to send, make the actual speaker clear before reviewing those forms.
English verb phrases become ordered Burmese material
The beginning grammar illustrates verb-following elements နေ for an ongoing action, ချင် for wanting an action, and နိုင် for ability. English places some comparable material before the main verb, as in want to come or can come. A word-by-word English order is therefore a poor frame for constructing a Burmese sentence.
The documented question ဘယ်သူ လာချင်သလဲ asks who wants to come. The desire is part of the verb construction, not a detached label that can be placed anywhere. When revising a message from someone comes to someone wants to come, translate the complete clause so the target order and its question ending remain coherent.
Ask who rather than inserting English question order
In the university examples, ဘယ်သူ serves in questions about a person, and လဲ occurs as a question ending. English asks who through a different arrangement and sometimes an auxiliary. Do not assume the target must contain a separate equivalent for English do or does in order to be a real question.
A booking message asking who is coming differs from asking who wants to come. Preserve that distinction in the source, including whether the question concerns a plan or someone’s preference. Burmese question structure should express the intended request, while the translated sentence still needs the full verbal meaning rather than only a question word.
With follows its reference in the documented pattern
The lesson identifies နဲ့ as with and shows it after the person expression in a question. English normally puts with before that expression. This is a useful concrete reminder when translating a meeting request: the two languages do not use the same order for every relationship.
For a final review of a Burmese message, check the speaker’s polite forms, the action plus any wanting or ability element, and the intended participant relationship. Keep Burmese punctuation and characters intact when copying the result. The sentence-ending mark ။ serves a role comparable to an English period; replacing unfamiliar text marks or rearranging small grammatical elements can undo a useful translation.
