Malayalam to Kannada: add the agreement the source leaves open
Identify the subject before selecting a Kannada ending
Ordinary modern Malayalam verbs do not mark person, gender, and number in the same way that Kannada finite verbs do. A Malayalam sentence can therefore leave distinctions unstated that a natural Kannada form needs to express. Identify the actor from a pronoun, name, or earlier sentence before choosing the target verb.
Do not infer gender from an occupation or assume every unnamed person is male. Where a source message genuinely leaves identity uncertain, a clearer source reference or a suitable target reformulation is preferable to a confident guess. This is particularly relevant in short forwarded messages where the original writer and the person being described may be different people.
Choose the right Kannada relationship
Kannada distinguishes familiar ನೀನು from ನೀವು, which can address a group or one person respectfully. The Malayalam sentence’s social setting should guide that choice. A request to an elder, customer, or unfamiliar professional contact may need a different target voice from a message to a close friend.
ಅವರು can refer respectfully to a single person as well as to several people. Keep number and courtesy separate when checking the translation. A respectful target form need not mean the actor has become a group. The associated verb should belong to the chosen form, so editing a pronoun alone may leave the Kannada sentence internally inconsistent.
Separate sandhi before rebuilding the Kannada expression
Malayalam joins words through sandhi, sometimes changing their boundary sounds. അതാണ് contains the relationship found in അത് ആണ്, “that is.” Identify the combined meaning before replacing pieces with Kannada words. Treating a joined form as an unrelated noun can derail the entire sentence.
Questions need the same care. എന്താണ് combines a question word with the copula and commonly asks “what is” something. Read the full question and its referent, then construct an ordinary Kannada question for that purpose. The number of Malayalam spaces is not a reliable guide to how many separate Kannada words the finished expression needs.
Shared language-family features do not make scripts interchangeable
Malayalam വെള്ളം and Kannada ನೀರು can both mean “water.” A literal sound transcription of the Malayalam word does not automatically produce the everyday Kannada term. Translate vocabulary by meaning; handle names through a separate spelling or transliteration decision. An institution or person may already have a conventional Kannada form worth preserving.
Kannada letters and Malayalam letters are distinct even when some curves look related. Keep dependent vowels and consonant combinations intact, and inspect the result in the application where it will be read. For longer instructions, identify which noun each description modifies before moving the clause into Kannada. A well-formed sentence should still assign the action to the same person and refer to the same document, date, amount, or booking as the original Malayalam message.
